Big Wheel Posted January 28, 2004 Report Posted January 28, 2004 In the fine print, does it say whether you have to shell out for the seller's bail? Quote
Jazzmoose Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 This is a steal!! Best description I can think of, for sure... Quote
JSngry Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 (edited) Sounds like a good deal to me. To "civilians", the notion of fake books like these seem like outright piracy or such, but for working musicians, they've been a fact of life for longer than most of us have been alive. I'm a bit surprised to see them offered so openly (to say nothing of so DAMN cheaply), but I'm seriously considering ordering one for myself, my old ones being tattered and torn. To get REAL Real Books (not the bogus "official" books which are cumbersome and not necessarily more accurate) entails finding a "connection" and paying whatever the going rate is, which can vary considerably depending on supply-and-demand. Last I heard, the going rate was $35 each. But I've heard of them going for as much as $50. Each. Remember, these things are SUPPOSED to be "for professional use only", which translates to "honor amongst theives" if you want to look at it that way. They're not supposed to take the place of official sheet music for general public use. If you're not a working musician or a serious student, keep away from stuff like this - it's not intended for you. But I bet this cat will take your money anyway... (btw - are the SPACES books still in circulation?) Edited January 29, 2004 by JSngry Quote
enalnitram Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 what the kids at the jazz schools are doing nowadays is downloading scanned versions of all the old realbooks, as pdf ebooks. each ebook is about 50mb. every couple of months, the whole collection turns up on a different url, usually ending with .de or .dk or .zz or something. all of the common real books are available this way. if you don't feel like googling the moving target, you can just get them all off of kazaa. Jim Alfredson Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 I don't condone the above method, but I must say, I've heard it's pretty cool. The version I heard about even has a .pdf index whereupon you can look up any tune, click the name and presto, there's the chart. Why pay $7 when you can download it for free? Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 I should ad, this should probably be in the Musician's Forum, not the Forums Discussion board. And away we go... Quote
JSngry Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 Why pay $7 when you can download it for free? Hey, I'm old school. SOMEBODY gets some money somewhere along the line. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 Okay, Jim; send me a buck, and I'll see if I can find 'em! Quote

No doubt, and I have a borrowed copy of Vol. 1 myself. But putting Real Books on Ebay and advertising them? That's practically ASKING to get busted. Quote
