mjzee Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 There was a Milestone two-fer called "Thelonious Monk - April in Paris/Live." According to the liner notes, this was drawn from tapes provided to Riverside to fulfill Monk's contract. The original two-disc set on Riverside was called "Two Hours With Thelonious," and had concert material from France and Italy. There was a subsequent one-disc set on Riverside called "Monk in France," containing the Paris portion. In comparing "Monk in France" to "April in Paris/Live," I see that AIPL has the following tracks not on MIF: Jackie-ing, Rhythm-a-ning, Epistrophy, and April In Paris. Are these tracks available on any other release? Quote
JETman Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 They should at least be on the Complete Riverside box. Not sure if they've been on any other single cd releases. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 Some of these tunes may have first appeared on "In Europe Vol. 2" and "Vol. 3." http://www.discogs.com/Thelonious-Monk-Thelonious-Monk-In-Europe-Vol-2/release/2561904 http://londonjazzcollector.wordpress.com/2012/09/11/thelonious-monk-in-europe-vol-3-1961-riverside/ Quote
John L Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 Some of these tunes may have first appeared on "In Europe Vol. 2" and "Vol. 3." http://www.discogs.c...release/2561904 http://londonjazzcol...1961-riverside/ That is correct. Those two albums contain 10 of the 12 songs recorded in France in 1961, including all four tracks listed above by mjzee. They do not contain Crepuscule with Nellie and Body and Soul. I believe that those two songs were first released as bonus tracks on the Milestone Blues Five Spot 2-fer, and were then included on the Monk in France CD. Quote
ejp626 Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 Now I am a little confused. Is this material on the Riverside Monk box, or is it not included because it came out on Milestone? I can't check at the moment, since the booklet is packed away. Thanks. Quote
