GA Russell Posted January 3, 2013 Report Posted January 3, 2013 Forbes is reporting that computer chip company Intel will introduce a la carte cable tv for anyone with internet service starting in March. http://www.forbes.com/sites/kellyclay/2012/12/30/why-intels-new-iptv-service-will-do-what-google-apple-and-microsoft-cant/ http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-cable-2013-1#ixzz2GkSFccYf Quote
Jazzmoose Posted January 3, 2013 Report Posted January 3, 2013 Interesting. This will definitely shake things up, but I'm not sure it'll be in a way that people will like. I'll bet there's a lot of channels out there that wouldn't get enough support to survive in this system, for one thing. I'm also curious how much individual channels will cost. I'll bet most people will either have to give up some channels they enjoy occasionally, or will end up paying more each month for TV. Quote
Quincy Posted January 3, 2013 Report Posted January 3, 2013 I've been waiting a long time for this day. This has the potential to slow down the crazy money in sports if it's accurate to assume that many would dump ESPN if given the choice (as noted in the 2nd article). Quote
GA Russell Posted January 3, 2013 Author Report Posted January 3, 2013 I was not clear in my OP. Intel's first test market will be in March. This will work regardless of your ISP. Quote
Dan Gould Posted January 3, 2013 Report Posted January 3, 2013 I've been waiting a long time for this day. This has the potential to slow down the crazy money in sports if it's accurate to assume that many would dump ESPN if given the choice (as noted in the 2nd article). This can also drastically alter the drama landscape of cable TV (outside of HBO and Showtime). Can TNT and the many other networks with original dramatic programming finance the same number of productions in an a la carte world? Quote
JSngry Posted January 3, 2013 Report Posted January 3, 2013 What's the over/under until it's mostly all porn & preachers? Quote
Dan Gould Posted January 3, 2013 Report Posted January 3, 2013 You're forgetting reality tv. No revenue reduction will kill that and it will dominate ahead of porn and preachers. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 What's the over/under until it's mostly all porn & preachers? Two weeks, I think... Quote
