Jim Alfredson Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 Maybe this is new, maybe not. I haven't seen anything like this before. I got an email today of which the title is: "RE: Question for seller -- Item #280760251" As anyone who has used Ebay and used the "Ask Seller A Question" function can attest, this is the standard title for an email from a seller if you've asked them a question. I didn't remember asking a question of a seller in weeks. So I opened the email up. And this is what it said: Hi, please add another $14 for shipping to VIRGINIA. flhybakz-lmne@yahoo.com wrote: Hello, what is the shipping cost to NEVADA? -------------------- Question from: eafleyku Title of item: Verizon Mobile Office Kit LG VX2000 VX1 VX10 Seller: oostout Starts: Jan-29-03 19:51:23 PDT Ends: Feb-05-03 19:51:23 PDT Price: Starts at $68.30 To view the item, go to: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=205804948 Visit eBay, The World's Online Marketplace TM at http://www.ebay.com Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! SitenBuilder - Free, easy-to-use web site desoign software Now I know I didn't ask any questions about a Verizon Mobile Office Kit. I don't have a Verizon cell phone. So I thought maybe my wife used my account. But then I realized it was talking about shipping to Nevada or Virginia. We live in Michigan. Before clicking on the link, I looked at the item number and realized is was only 9 digits. Ebay has been in the ten digit numbers for quite some time. Hovering my mouse over the link revealed the true address of the link (not the one that is displayed) which is: http://82.146.50.41/ws/eBayISAPI.dll/ViewI...gory=43045.html Notice the non-ebay IP address in the front. So thankfully I didn't click on it. Scam scam scam! Probably want you to enter your ebay name and password. Tricky!!! Quote

Daniel A Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Jim, I don't know if you've changed the 'secret' address behind the fake eBay link, but if not so, you should perhaps change it to something more "innocent" so that noone accidently ends up there by clicking on the link in your message. Son-of-a-Weizen Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Glad you mentioned that Jim. I just received the same message about a Samsung Mobile Office Data Cable Kit.......and an extra $9 shipping to Washington, DC. When I hovered over the link they included, the address was something like Http://Ant.elogic. Quote
BERIGAN Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 (edited) a slight variation I have gotten twice.... Dear eBay Member, Dear customer, you have been billed for $15.00 recently. Please update your billing information at eBay Billing Center. This is eBay auto generated message, if you think you received it by mistake or you want to remove these notifications, please update your profile at Billing Center Not that clever, but when I was looking for a link to hover the mouse over, there isn't one, just a "button" but it gives no info to the web address! clifford_thornton Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 I've been getting those lately too, as well as some from "PayPal." Kinda freaky, if you ask me... C Quote
