Dan Gould Posted February 27, 2013 Report Posted February 27, 2013 Mary Stallings has a couple of nice CDs on Concord including one with the Gene Harris Quartet backing her. Shoulda recognized her. Quote
NIS Posted February 27, 2013 Report Posted February 27, 2013 (edited) I have to be honest and say that I've only listened to the BFT one time. This has nothing to do with the fine tracks you have presented but I just haven't been into music the last couple of months. So I apologize for not giving your BFT the attention it deserves. 10. Isfahan Available Jelly Amsterdam, Netherlands, Bimhuis 2009-11-20 Eric Boeren- c, Wolter Wierbos- tb, Michael Moore- as,cl, Goran Krmac- tuba, Ernst Glerum- b, Michael Vatcher- d. Available Jelly is one of my favorite groups, and some of my favorite musicians. Their "Happy Camp" album is for my money one of the best pieces of music ever. I'm pretty sure I would never have guessed this one no matter how many times I would have listened to it. Is it from a private tape? Edited February 27, 2013 by NIS Quote
jeffcrom Posted February 27, 2013 Report Posted February 27, 2013 The only thing that really surprised me was Sonny Fortune. I've enjoyed his flute playing in the past, but this cut drove me up the wall. Loved Frank Wess and Yusef Lateef, and never would have guessed either. Quote
felser Posted February 27, 2013 Report Posted February 27, 2013 Sonny Fortune. I've enjoyed his flute playing in the past, but this cut drove me up the wall. Me too on the Fortune. Where is that Renee Rosnes available, is that on CD? Would like to pick it up if so. Quote

I recorded this from the radio. Quote
JSngry Posted February 27, 2013 Report Posted February 27, 2013 Yeah, that Fortune thing came out of left field. The closest I could come was Sam Most. GEEZ! And I will say that if I'm going to misidentify anybody as Dexter, I'm glad it's Yusef, and not some new breed imitator-specialist. Quote
webbcity Posted February 28, 2013 Report Posted February 28, 2013 #10 is a total surprise! And I guess I'm the only one who likes Sonny Fortune on flute. I found his playing really interesting actually, not difficult at all. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted February 28, 2013 Report Posted February 28, 2013 01. Darn That Dream Bucky Pizzarelli & Ken Peplowski American Classics Quintet Dizzy's Club Coca Cola 2012-12-06 Bucky Pizzarelli- g, Ken Peplowski- cl, Derek Smith- p, Greg Cohen- b, Chuck Red- d, vib. 02. In a Sentimental Mood Sonny Fortune Sharel Cassity Quintet Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, NYC 2012-09-20 Sonny Fortune- as, fl, Sharel Cassity, (omit) Michal Cochran- p, David Williams- b, Steve Johns- d. I can't believe that this is Sonny Fortune--his flute sound has been different on other recordings. I am thinking of Miles Davis' "Maiysha" and how he sounded there. Maybe he was having a bad day when this was recorded. 03. In a Sentimental Mood Jimmy Heath Quartet Montreux Jazz Festival - Platinum, Montreux, Switzerland 1989-07-15 Jimmy Heath- fl, ss, Tony Purrone- g, Ben Brown- eb, Akira Tana- d I should have been able to identify this. I was, and am, a fan of the Heath Brothers' albums and enjoyed them live in the late 1970s and early 1980s. I remember Tony Purrone performing live with them, but could not identify him when I heard this. 04. Giant Steps Joey DeFrancesco Trio Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, NYC 2013-01-03 Joey DeFrancesco- Hammond B3, Paul Bollenback- g, Jeremy Thomas- d. I have enjoyed Jeremy Pelt and Renee Rosnes a lot when I have seen them live, but could not identify them. I am just no good at this! (but I still find it fun to participate). 09. Moonk's Mood/ Body and Soul Randy Weston Viersen, Festhalle, 02. Internationales Jazzfestival 1988-08-20 Randy Weston- p. How could I not hear that this is Randy Weston? i have many of his albums.
