B. Clugston Posted September 23, 2013 Report Posted September 23, 2013 There are worse NHL trades than the Gretzky one. Sure the Oilers gave up the game's greatest player and yes, Carson didn't up to expectations, but the Oilers won a Stanley Cup two years later. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted September 23, 2013 Report Posted September 23, 2013 (edited) See what you think of this list. http://www.thefumble.com/galleries/22-worst-trades-sports-history/2008256 The very first example on the list is a perfect example of how moronic these lists usually are. I assume they're written by twenty-somethings who have no idea what happened at the time and simply look through pages of stats and think they understand the history of the sport. What choice did the Nets have but to give up Erving? The team wouldn't exist if they hadn't done this. They basically traded Dr. J for an NBA franchise. How can this be a bad trade? Tom 1960 Posted September 23, 2013 Report Posted September 23, 2013 At least when it comes to baseball, I always thought the Ryan for Fregosi trade ranked as one of the worst of all time. Quote
GA Russell Posted September 23, 2013 Author Report Posted September 23, 2013 BClug, as I recall, Pocklington failed to pay all that he owed Gretsky and thus voided the contract. Gretsky allowed him to trade him to Los Angeles to save face, when the reality was that Gretsky could have declared himself a free agent and signed with the Kings without the Oilers' permission. Moose, I was thinking the same thing. In those days, wasn't $3 million a lot of money? Quote
