Larry Kart Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 Today's NY times obit says that the film adaptation of Stone's novel "Dog Soldiers," "Who'll Stop the Rain?" was "mostly forgettable." Couldn't disagree more. Quote
ejp626 Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 RIP. I have to admit I've known of Stone for a long time but never read anything by him. I even moved a copy of Outerbridge Reach several times without ever reading it. I may still get to it one of these days, but I suspect that A Hall of Mirrors (his first) is likely to be the novel that works best for me. Quote
jlhoots Posted January 12, 2015 Report Posted January 12, 2015 One of my favorite writers - A Flag For Sunrise, Dog Soldiers, Damascus Gate, etc. R.I.P. Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 13, 2015 Report Posted January 13, 2015 Sorry to hear that--Dog Soldiers remains one of my favorite 70s-noir novels, and also liked A Flag For Sunrise. Started Damascus Gate, which seemed really promising, but bogged down in it for some reason and never returned... should give it another try. Maybe one of the last writers around who grew up in the immediate shadow of Hemingway? Though Conrad always seemed a point of comparison/influence as well. Quote

Couldn't disagree more. Nor could I..... although I'm sure the film was released as "Dog Soldiers" in the UK I particularly remember a scene on the deck of a cargo ship as Nick Nolte is returning to the US, where he is working out to a terrific piece of music on the soundtrack.... great stuff. It's here from about 15:00 mins... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0jqIM41IJM Edited January 13, 2015 by Head Man Quote

Couldn't disagree more. I too couldn't disagree more. Having read 2 of his novels, I am stunned that he lived so long and stayed married to the same woman 55 years. Quote
