jeffcrom Posted February 19, 2015 Report Posted February 19, 2015 Okay, I was amusing myself between Anthony Braxton concerts by doing some geocaching (look that up if you're curious) in rural Alabama, between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. I enjoy exploring old cemeteries, and when I'm traveling, I often look for geocaches hidden near graveyards. So today I visited the small Mt. Hope Cemetery in the country outside of Vance, Alabama. There were some interesting stones and epitaphs, but I was astounded to come across the grave of Sun Ra trumpeter Jothan Callins, out in the middle of nowhere: Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 19, 2015 Report Posted February 19, 2015 Whoa. I am relatively familiar with his music apart from Ra - that Winds of Change LP he released is quite solid. Quote
romualdo Posted February 20, 2015 Report Posted February 20, 2015 What a find - I'd say much better than a geocaching "moment" - I was into this a few years back when the children were younger & still at home - great form of exercise & getting away from the house (especially the children's electronic/digital toxins) Quote
marcello Posted February 20, 2015 Report Posted February 20, 2015 Thanks for remembering, Jeff. I have the LP also and have to play it again soon. Quote
jcallins Posted March 24, 2015 Report Posted March 24, 2015 Jothan was my uncle, and my musical hero and we miss him dearly. Thanks for remembering him. Quote
jeffcrom Posted March 24, 2015 Author Report Posted March 24, 2015 Welcome, Joel. Your uncle is certainly not forgotten around here. Quote
