romualdo Posted March 24, 2015 Report Posted March 24, 2015 The New Zealand "Sarang Bang" label has recently released (late last year) an LP titled "1966" http://www.sarangbang.co.nz/records/artists/bernie-mcgann.html It's two live sessions from 1966 (both recorded in Sydney, one in King's Cross) Quintet & Quartet lineups, extensive liner notes on the LP cover (500 pressed), sound quality is remarkably good Sounds very Colemanish - they even do a version of "When will the Blues Leave" The music (just under 50mins) is also available as a download from Bandcamp Quote
xybert Posted March 24, 2015 Report Posted March 24, 2015 (edited) I don't have a record player but i heard a track from this album on a review blog and it sounded very nice indeed. Thanks for pointing out that it's on bandcamp, i'll be checking that out. Review/track here: http://www.elsewhere.co.nz/jazz/6741/bernie-mcgann-1966-sarang-bang/ Random anecdote because i so rarely get to do these type of things: i met label owner/producer Gianmarco Liguori when i bought some CDs from him off TradeMe (NZ equivalent of ebay). Really nice guy, i gathered that he was the NZ distributor for ESP, ended up getting a few more discs from him when i went to pick up my original purchase. He also introduced me to NZ pianist Murray McNabb via a freebie but that's another story. Edit: here's the bandcamp link, the whole album can be streamed, can also pay for a download if you wish: http://sarangbangrecords.bandcamp.com/album/1966-2 Great stuff, i reckon. sonnymax Posted March 25, 2015 Report Posted March 25, 2015 (edited) I only recently became aware of McGann, and I like what I've heard. So far, I've got McGann and Playground, and I'll likely download more of the ten titles offered by Rufus Records on Bandcamp. Edited March 25, 2015 by sonnymax Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 25, 2015 Report Posted March 25, 2015 Yeah, I picked this up from Dusty Groove a while back. It's excellent. Have his Emanem LPs as well, which are also strong. Quote
