HutchFan Posted January 29, 2024 Report Posted January 29, 2024 Brahms: String Quintets Nos. 1 & 2 / Brandis Quartett, Brett Dean (Brilliant Classics, rec. 1996) These works have the profundity and depth one expects of a symphony, but it's somehow distilled to just five players. Gorgeous! Quote

HutchFan Posted January 29, 2024 Report Posted January 29, 2024 (edited) Now spinning: Marilyn Horne & Leonard Bernstein perform Falla's El Amor Brujo [with the NYPO] and Ravel's Schéhérazade [with the ON de France] (Columbia Masterworks, 1978) First listen to a new-to-me LP that I picked up a few weeks ago. Initial impressions: I think the Ravel is a more persuasive than the Falla. When it comes to El Amor Brujo, Stokowki & Shirley Verrett with the Philadelphia O are still tops in my book. Not too convinced about "El Amor Brujo" overall .... btw but the performance by Charles Dutoit + OSDM on Decca from the early 1980's at least worth a try ... Quote
soulpope Posted January 30, 2024 Report Posted January 30, 2024 Obviously I`m collecting great performances of this Haydn euvre, but this emotional recording by the Borodin Quartet tops it all .... Quote
