T.D. Posted January 2 Report Posted January 2 Have always been a fan of Grumiaux, even though my violin tastes have drifted to the HIP end of the spectrum. Quote

T.D. Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 (edited) Yes on all counts. To continue an earlier discussion, the Cuarteto Casals Beethoven cycle is a modern one I'd really like to hear, but I'm not going to spend the money [Added: OMG, it's on Youtube]. The old Hungarian Quartet Erato reissue (at $18.95 on Amazon) would be far more likely. Edited January 3 by T.D. Quote

Heard the Cuarteto Casals in concert quite some time ago without lasting impressions .... probably will give their Beethoven a try as available on YT .... Quote

Sign of old age, but I recall making the same comments about Cuarteto Casals quite a while ago (a year or more? too lazy to search). You may even have had the same reply. But at that time their whole Beethoven series was not yet on Youtube, only 1 or 2 of the 3 underlying 3-CD releases. Sadly, I promptly forgot about the project. I am really going to listen to the whole Casals cycle on Youtube soon. Honest. 😁 Quote

mikeweil Posted January 5 Report Posted January 5 Been listening to two dozen ciaconas and chaconnes from as many 17th century composers during the last few hours, to prepare a lecture on this type of "dance" ..... Quote
HutchFan Posted January 5 Report Posted January 5 Now listening to Shostakovich's Fourth Symphony, as heard in this 2-LP set: Like the DSCH albums above, this music originally was recorded for Melodiya in the Soviet Union and then subsequently licensed for release in the U.S. Quote
