More than a whole lot of music, Roussel's symphonies hit me the same way. If I'm in the right mood, I find them fascinating. If I'm not, I have to stop right there. So what's the mood factor? Perhaps it's that there's something oblique and fundamentally unsettled built into Roussel's language, and if you yourself are feeling the least bit unsettled/uneasy -- and who isn't these days? -- Roussel can tip over the hay wagon.   BTW, have you heard his ballet "Aeneas"? There a terrific Erato recording by Martinon, maybe only on LP. Quote

Referentzhunter Posted March 24, 2020 Report Posted March 24, 2020 (edited) Kk 140 t/m 172 Heartless play by Scott Ross .... like a robot .... Listen to Emil Gilel's recording instead . It's complete but it is completely lacking heart . Scarlatti's zodiac sign is Scorpio what stands for passion even obsession ( deep feelings ). Scott Ross expression stands for the exact opposite ! Listening to Scott is still enjoyable but not in a puristic way. Edited March 24, 2020 by Referentzhunter Quote
mikeweil Posted March 24, 2020 Report Posted March 24, 2020 Excellently performed, and much better music than most musicologists want to make us believe. Quote
