Hardbopjazz Posted September 3, 2016 Report Posted September 3, 2016 (edited) I saw The Joanne Brackeen Quartet tonight. The announcer introducing the band mentioned that she was the only woman to be a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. She was a Jazz Messenger in 1970. Were there ever any other women in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers? I did some searching and couldn't fine any. Edited September 3, 2016 by Hardbopjazz Quote
mikeweil Posted September 3, 2016 Report Posted September 3, 2016 (edited) If you have the time to read all through it - I do not know of a better source: http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Artists/Blakey/chron.htm From that web page: "When I had Joanne Brackeen in the band, we were playing down South. This was in Georgia or somewhere. This guy came up and said, 'Hey, there, Mr. Blakey. You know you got a white gal in the band!' I said, 'No shit, I have to check it out. I thought I had a piano player!'" - Art Blakey, Jazz Magazine, Winter 1979, p.46. Edited September 3, 2016 by mikeweil Quote

Concerts with a point of departure like here have (also) a high upwards potential - but in either case would have loved to be in the audience .... Quote
