This one is really a treasure ! They sound wonderful together, and I think it was the only occasion Dannie Richmond (one of my favourite drummers) recorded for BN.

Yes, Sony used a European cover for this release; it's better known in the US with this cover;

John Lewis - Afternoon in Paris (Dreyfus)
A gem. Originally recorded for the short-lived All Life label in 1979.

Purchased through the Greenleaf $3 sale:a3984691353_16.jpg

Once again.  I need to revisit my other Dave Douglas albums.  Ths album is a Jimmy Giuffre tribute, with the follow-up being a Carla Bley tribute.  I remember buying Chet Doxas' excellent Sidewalk Etiquette after hearing that he and his brother were working with Douglas, so I'm glad that the Greenleaf sale finally prompted me to buy both Riverside albums.

I go hot and cold regarding Tony Bennett.  Some times he is just too over the top and self-indulgent for my taste.  I like him better in a small group format and perhaps best of all in a setting like this -- just the singer and a pianist.  It's a good set including one of Duke Ellington's less well known tunes, "Love Scene", and a tribute to Bobby Hackett.

On to more Dave McKenna, or at least the hands of Dave McKenna

He really goes to town of "Nagasaki".

McKenna is like a bear, isn't he?!?!  BIG and POWERFUL.

He's sorta like the Lazar Berman of jazz. ;)

I'm listening to more Duke Jordan:

with Mads Vinding and Ed Thigpen; from the same '73 sessions that produced Flight to Denmark

That's so right about Dave McKenna being big and powerful.  What's nice about the second video posted above is being able to watch his hands as he plays and seeing just how nimble he was and what a terrific left hand he had.  It's also nice to be reminded of what a good songwriter Harry Warren was.  He seems to get short shrift when it comes to remembering the composers of the Great American Songbook

Now, another favorite pianist, Art Hodes:
