It´s a very good one, but most I liked the last track from another venue: "We´ll Meet Again". When you imagine, that it´s quite possible that they never met again since he died so young.

I also like very much the other from Germany, from about the same time, with Mulgrew Miller. Larry Willis is a good piano player, but I loved Mulgrew more, and Tony Reedus more. Stafford James is great !

In preparation for the “Summer 1985” box due to arrive today, I’m listening to disc 3 of “Dave’s Picks Vol. 52” which is a 1983 concert. I’m pretty unfamiliar with late Grateful Dead as I used to not like listening to this decade or so of Dead at all.

I don´t really know much about it, but "Summer 85" brings other memories to me:

In a small town in lower austria there was one festival, never repeated, but it had the greatest stars ever:

Miles Davis, Astrud Gilberto, Pharoah Sanders, Jackie McLean, Jamaladeen Tacuma, Tommy Flanagan, Jimmy Witherspoon - Dee Dee Bridgewater, Modern Jazz Quartet, Woody Herman, Charlie Haden Libration Orchestra, Joe Zawinul.....

Funny. We all hear with different ears.  I prefer Larry Willis and Victor Lewis.  ;)

I wish I could have been there for THAT!  :tup

Following some Bandcamp back trails, I stumbled across Al Tanner's ‘Happiness Is…' record from 1967, reissued by Jazzman. https://touchejazz.bandcamp.com/album/happiness-is

And then it turns out there is another album from 1993? called Jazz Tour de Force on Spotify and Apple Music/iTunes.  This is particularly odd, as if you listen all the way through on the last two tracks they are clearly mislabeled.  Track #9 is actually Isolation.  And Track #10 appears to be "Issa" (though he may be announcing "East Side") which means that track 6 and 7 are probably entirely different compositions.  Certainly seems odd.

Has anyone else been listening to these recordings?

Summer '85 was a funky one for me. . . I was earning very little money, just beginning to play drums in a band and seemed sleep deprived a lot. . . and I had a disastrous relationship with a gal that put me completely off romance for a few years. Still, I miss some aspects of that iife in Austin then. . . so different than my sylvan life now.

It's akin to learning about color theory in painting. If you don't know theory then you really don't know what you're looking at. Notice this has nothing to do with appreciation of the artwork in question, but rather understanding the analytical side of it. - Jim Alfredson
