ghost of miles Posted June 11, 2020 Report Posted June 11, 2020 Wow--came across mention of this interview while reading about Maria Golia's new book about Ornette. Somehow missed it when it was first posted to Ethan Iverson's Do The Math blog, as part of an in-depth two-part article. I'm about 20 minutes in--fascinating conversation! It was part of Gunther and Nat Hentoff's weekly WBAI "The Scope Of Jazz" program: Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry February 1960 radio interview with Gunther Schuller Quote

But when Dewey called Monk and asked to get together to go over the tunes, Monk merely said, “Do you know my music or don’t you?” If Dewey had said yes, he could have had the gig: In other words, show up and play the book perfectly from memory, done and done. However, Dewey was used to a situation like Ornette Coleman, where you rehearsed everything over and over in advance. Therefore, unfortunately, Dewey never played with Monk. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 13, 2020 Report Posted June 13, 2020 Really great interview; gonna have to revisit it several times to digest it. Quote
