Reminds me of the ground plan for Silchester in Southern England. Only parts of the wall for that site remains.

Is that a theatre/amphitheatre in the bottom RHS?

Very cool but leaves me wondering:

Is this truly an exhaustive means of doing archaeology? 

How did Italy come to know that this was the location of the city and protect it by law?

It takes such an incredible amount of time for excavation so not waiting for it to be revealed is, of course, very impressive. I still prefer to ultimately see the structures. I think there would be a lot more to learn if they were allowed to dig.
