Tom in RI
I’ve only become aware of British reedman Alan Barnes in the last few years. Solid mainstream guy who sounds equally a home on baritone, tenor and alto. Was listening today to a date he co-led with fellow reedman John Hallam and what I presume is an all Brit rhythm section. I see has quite a few dates out on the Woodville label, additional recommendations welcome. John Tapscott
I have a number of Alan Barnes CD's on Woodville: I would recommend almost any of them, but these are among my favorites. I often think that baritone is his strongest "axe".
BillF
I know Alan Barnes well and have seen him play many times. I fully back John's selection (particularly the one with Scott Hamilton) and would perhaps add this:
sonnymax
One more recommendation: Alan Barnes (sx, cl, bcl) Bruce Adams (tp) Mark Nightingale (tb) Robert Fowler, Karen Sharp (sx, cl) David Newton (p) Simon Thorpe (b) Clark Tracey (d). 2022 Woodville WVCD153. JSngry
Did he ever play with Maynard? I've heard that name somewhere.
