Art Hodes -- "Hodes' Art"

Henry Red Allen -- "World on a String"

If you're not familiar with Raymond Burke, who never left New Orleans much, I think you're going to like his clarinet playing on the Hodes album.

Arrived today and listening now. What a great album. Burke fits beautifully with the light, laid-back feeling of the small groups here. Really enjoying it. I have Burke's Crescent City Music, St. Louis Blues disc as well. Should play that for comparison sake later.

Thanks, Bev, for bringing this one to my attention, though a new formula/syndrome is emerging:

Stitt + Fresh Sound = pain in the wallet

Bill, Did you spot that Fresh Sound have issued Stitt's Blows the Blues and The Hard Swing coupled on one cd. Ordered yesterday.

Buddy DeFranco -- "1949 - 1952 Studio Performances" (chronological classics)

I like snagging some of these Chrono Classics when they're offered at a reasonable price, as this one was ($9 and change, new).

Just got a few Chronogical Classics in the mail:

Mildred Bailey 1938

Gene Krupa 1940, V3, and 1945

Benny Goodman 1941-1942

Charlie Ventura, 1951-1953 and 1946-1947

Bunny Berigan 1935-1936

Charlie Barnet 1940, V2

Count Basie 1946-1947

Cozy Cole 1944

Red Nichols 1928-1929

I kick myself for putting off buying this series back when Alldirect.com existed and had them for reasonable prices, but even so, I got these off of Amazon marketplace for about $10 including shipping. About half of them were shrink-wrapped. I don't know why certain titles are so much cheaper than others, but I'll take 'em.

I'm with you. Very nice!

That's nice to hear, Paul! I thought I'd discovered this one alone! The only other Ted Brown I have is on Tristano/Marsh, Intuition. I'd be pleased to hear any of your Ted Brown recommendations.

All Ted Brown's sessions are excellent IMO - can't go wrong, pity he's only been recorded so sparingly.

Thanks for posting that link. I haven't been around here as long as some of you guys, so I hadn't seen that thread, but I'm glad I did, just for Jim's post #21. That was brilliant.
