Milestones Posted 22 hours ago Report Posted 22 hours ago Any fans of Wycliffe Gordon? He is one of the few standout trombonists out there. I saw him live once and he put on a great show. I have several of his records, and there are some really good ones: DIg This!, The Search. You can hear outstanding work by Gordon (usually in his very vocalized style) and his sidemen. You can hear him in other projects too, such as Ted Nash's Sidewalk Meeting and The Herbie Nichols project. Yet it seems that he has not recorded in about a decade. How can this be? It really seems that trombonists don't receive enough respect. Quote
Dan Gould Posted 21 hours ago Report Posted 21 hours ago Definitely a fan, and one of the better talents to come out of the Wynton orbit. I have several of his Negel Heyer releases and definitely second The Search. Quote
Milestones Posted 21 hours ago Author Report Posted 21 hours ago I would say he is THE BEST musician to come from Wynton's orbit. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted 21 hours ago Report Posted 21 hours ago I have seen Wycliffe numerous times. He is a marvelous musician. He plays trombone, and a number of other brass horns. Wycliffe also sings. Wycliffe loves New Orleans style jazz as well as Swing style, Funk style and Bebop. His enthusiasm on the band stand makes his performance great fun. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted 20 hours ago Report Posted 20 hours ago His website says that he played on the Botti At Sea Jazz cruise in February of this year, so it looks like he is still playing. His label, Blues Back Records, went belly up in 2011 but he seems to have a few more recordings on his website and bandcamp pages. Two of the CDs in the Signature Series box on his website don't seem to appear anywhere else, so you might want to check that out. I have no idea if any of these recordings are recent as they don't list recording dates for a any of them that I can find. Quote
