Look, it is a worthy event and "cause" BUT don't you think it is rude to make your first (and maybe only) post an ad?

Lord knows I "do business" here, but at least I enter into dialogue with the fine members.

This is not your "neighborhood advertizer".

Apologies. Won't do that again. I've been a "lurker" for many months and thought it would be OK because Wig is a loved and respected member of the jazz community - I have no monetary interest whatsoever in the upcoming gig, etc. It is just going to be a great night of straight ahead jazz with some very special "surprise" guests, so I wanted to get the word out.

Again, sincere apologies and won't happen again.

In Marla's defense I'd like to say that she's not a spammer, and has been a good citizen and participant at Jazz Corner for some time; hopefully she'll share her thoughts and enthusiasms (especially about things vocal) here too.

I abhor "spam" as much as the next person, but Chuck, seriously -- what made you assume that makpjazz57 had a financial interest in promoting Wig's gig? And *so what* if this is her first and only post? Lots of jazzers LOVE Wig --- and would be glad to get word of this event. I plan to drive up from Oceanside for this celebration if an upcoming surgery will permit me.

Quite honestly, I feel the presumptious knee-jerk reactions to the initial post were rude.

In Chuck's defense (and whoever thought I'd write that?), the initial post sure felt like spam to me, with the contact number, prices, and price break on the CD.

Nevertheless, welcome, Marla, and don't worry about whether or not you're thoughts are worthy of sharing! There're guys here with 3000 posts, and about four of them are worthwhile. ;)

Thanks, Dan. I did a quick cut/paste from the body of an email. Had I not been in such a rush (assuming it would have been OK to post this), I would have taken everything off other than the date and the musicians involved with the gig.

Suffice it to say, I'll be real careful in the future!

Welcome to the Board, Marla, and don't be put off by first impressions. If you've been a lurker for a while, you won't be. All of us here have gotten a bit feisty and carried away now and again. Hope to see you posting more in the future.

Hi All,

Just returned from L.A. and Gerry Wiggins' brithday celebration/CD release party at the Jazz Bakery. Quite a lineup with a few surprises: Eric Reed (Wig has known Eric since his high school days in L.A. and Eric attended and played as the surprise guest), John Campbell, John Hammond, Art Hillery, Ernie Andrews, Rebecca Parris, Bob Maize, Bill Cunliffe, Jim Hughart, Wig's son, Hassan Shakur (J.J. Wiggins), John Clayton, Steve Huffstetter, Cyrus Chestnut, Ralph Penland, Paul Humphrey. In attendance, but not performing were Buddy Collette, Horace Silver, Bill Henderson. Also, actor Brock Peters. While there were many outstanding musical moments, perhaps one of the most beautiful for me was Bill Cunliffe's tribute to Wig - he played Wig's composition, "Sonor." Also, the segment with Cyrus, Wig's son and Ralph Penland, was very exciting - they sounded like they had been swinging together for years!

Thanks, Dan. It was. I think the most touching parts of the evening were those where both fans and Wig's peers were gathered 'round him to pay tribute, say hello, etc. In fact, when Wig pulled up in front of the Bakery, there was already a small crowd of fans and musicians and it took him a good 1/2 hour to get inside the Bakery. Makes for a special time when we can honor those musicians who are still very much here with us!
