  1. Looking to grab the "Music From Peter Gunn" and "More Music From Peter Gunn" disks and am curious as to the sound quality of the various re-issues. There are the expensive Japanese, the BMGs out of Germany or domestic in the Living Stereo imprint, the Buddha with a couple extra tracks on the single disc and Musicrama. I'm confused.
  2. Look out for "Look Out!" and Parlan's "Speakin' My Piece" just for the classic 'Wadin''. The former was a Collector's Choice and might be tough and I believe the latter is a JRVG only (aside from Mosaic).
  3. ARTIST: SHIRELLES, THE TITLE: BIG JOHN ALBUM: BABY IT'S YOU WRITER: A. SOMMERS/J. PATTON "(big john, big john) big john, won't you come on home ain't you gonna marry me my folks all wanna know when the weddin's gonna be they're makin' plans, shakin' hands been waitin' so long there's somethin' goin' wrong big john, if you don't come home i'm gonna have to leave this place my folks know you've jilted me i'm ashamed to show my face they're makin' plans, shakin' hands been waitin' so long there's somethin' goin' wrong (bridge) they all told me 'bout the things you do if what they told me is true they all said that i'd soon find out i'm wastin' my kisses on you (instrumental) there's somethin' goin' wrong (repeat bridge, then verse 2) (big john) been waitin' so long (big john) there's somethin' goin' wrong (big john) ...and fade"
  4. As serendipity has it I clicked over to eBay and MTNYS had 1m 28s left. So I'll give it a whirl again next week. I imagine AOTB is probably pretty hard to find. And I just found out that The Shirelle's "Big John" was a co-pen of Patton? Is that so??
  5. HUGE fan of Cabell's work on ACCENT ON THE BLUES Marvin Cabell, I suppose, is one of those guys you either get right away or never do, and there's no real "right answer". But I dug him the first time I heard him, just as I did ACCENT ON THE BLUES. We used to get REALLY stoned and listen to BN sides on a regular basis back in them days, and AOTB was always a fave for that deep, DEEP groove, the way Cabell rode it with such confidient, unstudied nonchalance, and for Leroy Williams unformed yet undeniable hipness. And, of course, Patton his ownself. Many years have passed, and the system is relatively toxin-free these days, but it's an album that STILL gets me high, and Marvin Cabell is still one of the major reasons. This probably TRULY explains nothing, but there it is anyway! Sure wish I'd spent my time back in the day wrapping ears around this kind of stuff. It's frightening to think of the music I wasted my lobes and the buzz on. As always your insight's make one take notice. Thanks. B)
  6. Picked Basra in support of our troops.
  7. people actually voted for Minor Move with the Mobley and Jackson in the line-up.
  8. It'll be good to see what flushes out here. My toss up is between Along Came with a nudge to Oh, Baby! As for those last two Ulmer sessions, can someone explain the merits of Marvin Cabell? I remember chucking those two back to the used record store almost immediately.
  9. that was phenomenal!!!!! meanwhile were all stuck with yet more mitsubishi rave ads.
  10. I found this on the ever great Jazzamatazz site. This disc is on the "Scufflin'" label.
  11. Don't know if anyone is "waiting" (due May 20) for this boogaloo but sounds interesting. Whilste I don't spin much Beck I do find his tunes worthy of an occasional boogie. 1. Paper Tiger 2. Tropicalia 3. Mixed Buziness 4. New Pollution, The 5. Devils Haircut 6. Sexx Laws 7. Loser 8. Jack Ass 9. Where It's At 10. He's A Mighty Good Leader 11. Nobody's Fault
  12. You guys are good as usual. Flipped over to Dusty and so it is... Guess I will delete this request in a bit? Thanks so much. (and I didn't know that Lon's ol' buddy 'owned' Reprise) 1. Duke Ellington -- Afro Bossa/Concert In The Virgin Islands . . . CD . . . $13.99 (Item: 46852) WEA (France), Early 60s Condition: New Copy 2 great albums from Duke Ellington -- both recorded for Frank Sinatra's Reprise label in the 60s, with an approach that's different than most of Duke's other work! Afro Bossa is the real winner here -- a very groovy album that's certainly Ellington's best for Reprise from the 60s, and a nice batch of tracks that have a distinctly Africanist leaning. We're not too sure about the "bossa", but the rhythm section does skip nicely at times, so you might be able to say that the album's kind of a bossa-ish session. Material's all original, and quite fresh for Ellington at the time. Titles include "Bonga", "Afro Bossa", "Tigress", and "Puple Gazelle". Concert In The Virgin Islands is a bit straighter, but still very nice -- and has some very interesting "tropical" type tunes -- like "Jungle Kitty", "Fade Up", "Island Virgin", and "Virgin Jungle", as well as some more standard Ellington material.
  13. Looking for this on CD. Know that the Reprise Years on Mosaic contains the lot but was this ever re-issued? Thanks, VG
  14. Scaling back on some of my collection and would like to pass on some vinyl to anyone interested. ... I will say that they were mostly played (and infrequently) on a B&O table, pristinely cared for and kept in poly sleeves. The covers are all near mint and have always been kept dry and inside sleeves. Any blemishes if any at all were usually there as purchased. 15. Cary, I've read raves about these as well as the previous "2s" being outstanding. Try calling Audio Lab in Harvard Square. Easier to find than that gigg you were looking for: 36 J.F.K. St., The Garage,Harvard Square CAMBRIDGE MA 02138 617/864-1144...right next to Newbury Comics. Give a shout if you find them there and I can give better directions. vint
  16. Downloading huh? that makes what's left of my lazy ludite hairs stand on end. I am with Big Al after looking over the Mosaic Select Patton lists. His 'holy trinity' should be solely repped just for art's sake. Those sides with Jackson and Vick are the best ever. I've been spinning "Oh, Baby!" as of late and can certainly say it's thee greasiest of the bunch. Listened to an old mix of Fred Jackson's BNs along with the Willettes on the way to work today and although not primarily steeped that guy was a cooker! As for cookin' Prestige should cull all those recipe inspired Jaws and Scott tunes together. For the downloaders just go through those and pick out only the kitchen cuts: "Chef", "Goose Hangs High", "Heat n Serve", "Pot's and Pans", "Broilers", "Smoke This", "High Fry", "Simmerin'" and "In the Kitchen". I still think Jerome Richardson glazes the pan when he solos but it's essential stuff! There was a great grease thread that many of you were contributing to over at the BN (soul jazz or some title like that) that sort of went south but if anyone has that data it would be great to peruse again.
  17. Caught the beginning of this show's revival last Tuesday and was amazed at the Reid Miles-esque 'intro' graphics. Well worth catching tonite. Just don't watch the rest.
  18. Big Al.... Thanks for startin' up some greeeeze. I've been culling through some discs and comps and have been slathering up some little silver platters in iTunes with these combos. 19. I don't know guys? According to the Dusty-Groove MadLib your'e dealing with "genius"! DONALD BYRD Caricatures Donald Byrd's last Blue Note album with fusion genius Larry Mizell -- and a doozy! The record builds off the style of previous Byrd/Mizell outings -- like Places & Spaces and Black Byrd -- mixing together a similar blend of heavy rhythms, keyboards, and sweet funky trumpet licks from Donald! GARY BARTZ Music Is My Sanctuary A fantastic bit of jazz funk fusion -- and one of the landmark 70s albums produced by Larry Mizell! This is Gary Bartz's second collaboration with Mizell -- a studio genius who could focus on the best talent of a jazz artist, then expand it using additional keyboards, percussion, and voices! ...and don't miss this one, especially because it's a John Patton album WITHOUT bass! JOHN PATTON Got A Good Thing Goin' A classic by Big John Patton! There's no bass on the set at all -- drums combine with added conga from Richard Landrum -- giving the songs an extra roll, and a modal approach that expands Patton's sound past his usual gutbuckety soul jazz! Includes Patton's massive groover "The Yodel"!
  20. Ss1... Good list! That "upcoming" session on DIW is from '98 titled "This One's For J.A." (jim anderson)
  21. Aw c'mon now...nothing like gettin' guests liquered up and doing some nice lounge mixes with Cassandra Wilson floating into Sarah Brightman and then maybe cue-ing up a little Aleister Crowley right into Diamanda Galas and then calming down the mood with a bit of Patricia Barber segueing into some Sondheim Angela Landsbury. Boy, if I were drunk enough I could go on and on....
  22. I did happen to look at the Blue Note site and found this wino jazz advertised along their usual column of links. Looks like right after BN gets finished with this great Norahzation well be able to turn to our once beloved label for some classic smooth jazz and classical gems to unwind and uncork to. Check out this compilation and the embarrassing segue of tunes that they probably paid somebody to painstakingly put together. I think I need a beer!
  23. If I'm not mistaken the 'obi' is essentially a 'upc' symbol for the Japanese market. They run promotions there that require you to send in the obi strips of ,say, "three cds and you get one free".
  24. I go back and forth with the ol' TOCJ vs BN Domestic debate, but the price alone for that Moncur set makes it well worth the investment. While it might be ever so slightly crispier than the Japanese I find that the overall sound consistency is it's plus. As well you get the ever funky 'Hipnosis' session. I even eBayed my JRVG of "One Step Beyond" after receiving the box - one of those van Gelders that really sounded great - but after some minor A/Bing found it better to pay for 3/4 of the Moncur III Select with the proceeds.
