  1. I had that exact same conversation about fifteen or so years ago. Not quite as tempered language-wise.
  2. Plastics!? Figured they'd hafta go with "goo goo ca choob..."
  3. Thanks for that thread uber-tuber. Great to read some Greg again. He sounds like a pompous prairie dog amidst a herd o' bison. Ring up Mr. Tanno and get the right version of this ya'll.
  4. Hows about Miho Hatori-
  5. er, more cute and kobe. that piece in her right hand is well marbled.
  6. Lemme guess....hmmmm.... Betty Page as done by Olivia the "queen of cheesecake". I prefer Jim Silkes take on her above all. But I sure wish that Egon Scheile had had a crack at her. My avatar at this moment is by Junko Mizuno...Japanese pixie of the kawaii and meaty!!!
  7. what timing....i just received the JRVG of "blue train" and compared it last evening to my regular, somewhat noisey tape wise, TOCJ pressing. help me out here y'all. this thing sounds like ready mix tinnitus. open, pour, listen if you can, take three aspirin and play the TOCJ in the morning. ouch!!!! yes the spread and all that is fine but i find that kind of thing a bit more easy to rectify within one's sytsem than having to kill all the treble to make this van gelderized version even tolerable. and who needs to hear lee morgan with warmth anyway? sure, drew is a bit more propped up and chambers does sound sweeter but any of his masters with philly joe have that shrill-ness that i'm sure was not intended back in '57. van gelder has turned this thing from the nice old "blue" of what i imagine that deep groove sounds like into the aural equivalent of those obnoxious icey lights on that BMW following me home. seriously!! how can you guys say you like this???? BTW, i bought it for the cover anyway! please help me out. is this a polarity flipper?
  8. EVERYONE SHOULD SIT AND CHECK THIS RIGHT OUT. MAN O MAN MNYTIME!!!!! Beautiful Stuff! Get this wacko over to the Mosaic Studios right now. do you know anything more about this artist?
  9. yeah, but you'll be able to scrape up enough sinse`from inside that gatefold (listed as "dust"?) to make it seem like it's worth the big K!
  10. Obviously done by the same crew that put together the corporate identity package for the Select Sets. Kind of has that "as seen on tv/ time life" look. Reid Miles and Francis Wolff are breakdancing.
  11. I was doing a little browsing trying to find an honest review of Tubby Hayes' "Mexican Green" (still looking), when I happened to see that Tubby and Band play in some jazz club in this '65 cult movie staring Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Donald Sutherland and Jim Dawson. "Voodoo: While on tour in the West Indies, jazz musician Biff Bailey eavesdrops on a voodoo ceremony and is inspired to create a piece incorporating the rhythms of the dance, ignoring warnings of dire consequences." (And I've recently seen a Dizzy Reece LP called "Possession and Exorcism" where Tubular Bells is covered?") Any recs?
  12. Lon... dat's classic. I couldn't view any images for some reason and posted the "bandaged ear" painting myself. Presently enabled, I have since deleted mine but a hail to your warped sense of humor.
  13. AMG seems to lead many to think that Roques was "responsible" for a great many Reid Miles covers. I believe he is more the designer from the eighties era onward (thus, those catesta posted don't fit and no way did he do 'Blue Lights'). A whole lot of credit goes to his re-issues. [Ooh maybe he's the one that can't proof read.] Would anyone have a listing that would show when the Roques' began? Or for that matter anyone know which BN was Miles' first and last?? I did find but have yet to peruse his site. patrickroques.com
  14. mind you that I cleaned off the "acculab" scale with my nose so this math may be a bit encumbered: ...but it should take forty four of those little babies to make your weight of 4.4#s, that's WITH the OBI strips! now, how many spoons did it take to fill up frankie machine's hi-hat?
  15. I got a wafflingly positive email back from someone with the initials "MC" after requesting a possible Select consisting of the Pullen Trios and Pullen Adams Quartet sessions. Now there's some essential shit.
  16. That's HER! My daughter, who's in her second year of piano, was very hip to it. Some hot stuff there. The show, which I don't listen to all that much, is Ray Smith's "Jazz Decades". At times he surprises ya with something like this. Looking closely at the cover posted I can see that bounce was a bit of Krupa. Thanks y'all.
  17. No Lon, not her. Give it another try. I know you will know. Maybe Queen' was too clean of a term for her? She evidently only recorded a spit of stuff. Supposedly it's all on one Classics Records CD. All I recall from the show.
  18. Heard some cuts on a local retro jazz show the other day. The artist was the so called Queen of the Boogie Woogie. The one cut was one of those typical double entendre boogies that had something to do with 'cooking'? The other couple were instumentals and they were unbelievable. All the hints I have. Can someone help me out?? Thanks.
  19. Ozzy voted for this one.
  20. Try Frisell's best minute of music with "N.Y. Flat Top Box" from the Naked City or Torture Garden albums. Hoo-weee. Incapable of Speed? Fa!
  21. Yeah JoeG, this is not the best example of Holcomb, Mrs. Horvitz. I was thinking of her other two prior albums on NoneSuch. Sort of that post George Winston driving through the midwest with a storm behind ya kind of music. She is warbly though.
  22. Soul Stream...I'd watch this one (not mine and it's not tough to find)NASHVILLE. It's the next step I guess. I have a tough time with violins and trombones and wah wahs at the same time. His best with Zorn is by far "News for LuLu" and Lewis' trombone works!! Also that mention of Robin Holcomb in that auction got me thinking to how good she really is. Maybe Norah could warm up for her on a tour.
  23. My favorite Frisell was his soundtrack to the TV Halloween special of Gray Larson's "Tales from the Far-Side". That was done with Wayne Horvitz and Joey Baron. He has resurrected some tunes with his violin and trombone band but never to the match of that stripped down score. Unfortunately it was only on once and I taped the wrong channel that night. Has anyone heard his new release: "The Intercontinentals"? I heard a great cut on the radio that featured Vinicius Cantuaria. It better be good with Elektra now propping MSRPs close to twenty bucks!
  24. " ...oooh mithuth thoerenstam you little monkey woman"
  25. Looking to grab the "Music From Peter Gunn" and "More Music From Peter Gunn" disks and am curious as to the sound quality of the various re-issues. There are the expensive Japanese, the BMGs out of Germany or domestic in the Living Stereo imprint, the Buddha with a couple extra tracks on the single disc and Musicrama. I'm confused.
