New Steve Lacy CD

Universal Music France is releasing a new Steve Lacy CD 'The Beat Suite'

which was recorded in Paris in 2001 before Lacy returned to the States.

The music was inspired by ten writings from various Beat poets (Ginsberg,

Corso, Burroughs, Kerouac, Rexroth and others).

The usual gang is there (George Lewis, Irene Aebi, Jean-Jacques Avenel

and John Betsch).

Hopefully the Beat Suite isn't just a repeat of Futurities, which would be hard to top anyway.

Poor Irene and all the disses. She never gets any love, even though she (by proxy) is an exceptional interpreter/deliverer of Lacy's music - particularly the poetic adaptations. Musically, she is a wonderful singer. Is it the tone that people don't like?

Any thoughts/reviews on this one, now that it's been out for a while? I haven't picked it up yet, mainly due to $ deficiencies, and partly because I've been heavily into Vespers. Beautiful recording, that one — with Ricky Ford in top form.

How is Itinerary while I'm at it? I've finally "gotten" Irene's singing.

irene's voice is just like lacy's sax. the tone is often IDENTICAL!

it is really a pretty amazing accomplishment. B-)

Aebi is one of those singers people can't be ambivalent about.  Personally, her singing is one of my favorite parts of the Vespers release, and I can't wait to hear this one.

lacy says in the liner notes that this one (the beat suite) "isn't for everyone"---and it isn't.

if you are a lacy fan though, i think that you will be rewarded by repeated listenings. B-)
