  4. Steve Douglas trumps Ward Cleaver this time.
  5. Following this discussion, I picked this up. Just my kind of music! Of the 60 tracks, I would not have included only four or five. All of the songs are well-known, but there are quite a number which I did not know were show tunes.
  6. Like many "anthologies" some cuts are better than others. Overall I'm glad to have it.

  9. Perhaps not "essential", but definitely enjoyable!!!
  10. Birthday gift from a friend. He is into all kinds of rock music, and thought this might be of interest, as I played with Kurdish/Turkish musicians for eight years. This is a successful band residing in the Netherlands, their tribute to the late folk singer Neşet Ertaş. Well done, but methinks the basic approach of such bands hasn't changed much over the last thirty years. https://www.discogs.com/release/36649081-Altın-Gün-Garip
  11. Just finished listening to the first disc. The copy I had ordered for twenty € including shipping turned out to be a double vinyl in pristine condition. 55 years ago I used to listen to classical radio while doing my school homework. This was my introduction to early 20th century avant garde, Ives and Ruggles included. This music is as unsettling now as it was back then.

  13. Also of note was the audio quality of the reissues in this series. I loved picking these up on trips to the continent. Always dashed to FNAC and stocked up.
  14. There’s a good chapter on Ed Bickert in Mark Miller’s book on Canadian jazz musicians entitled “Pete, Boogie and the Senator.”
  15. Bert played with Mingus which made me seek out a Mingus disc, and chose this one for the great band with Charles McPherson and Bobby Jones. Charles Mingus “Live in Rotterdam 1970” Crossroads cd Great stereo sound!
  16. I’m listening to Eddie Bert “Musician of the Year.” The sort of “house trio” of Hank Jones, Wendall Marshall and Kenny Clarke is always great support. As the cover subtly suggests, there is overdubbing of additional Bert trombone on tracks, which was a novel thing in 1955 (the title comes from the fact that Bert was so awarded by Metronome magazine that year). Eddie Bert “Musician of the Year” Savoy Denon cd
  17. Miles Davis Bootleg Series Vol. 6 “The Final Tour” Sony Blu-Spec CD2 edition, disc 1 A Paris 1960 concert. Excellent sound on this set.
  18. My sentiments exactly. Film composers are frequently required to also write (or provide) "source music for exactly a purpose such as this- radio music, phonogrpwh records, jukebox music, etc. Not sure how often a film production company of that time would want to pay to license an existing record for a few seconds of ambient background music when they're already paying a guy who could come up with something as perfect for the function as this.
