ghost of miles Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 I'm getting ready to place a large order, given that everything may change in 60 days... I already have quite a few Fantasy titles, but just out of curiosity, what are some Organissimo board members' favorites? Quote

LAL Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 The Mingus Debut box set. My local Tower store is having a big moving out sale this month. They're going to slash 50-70% off items that have been sitting in the store for ages. There's a Mingus Debut box in the store that qualifies - hope that goes in the discount bin. There's also that Yerba Buena box set. A list of some favourites: John Coltrane - Soul Trane Tadd Dameron - The Magic Touch Booker Ervin - Space Book & Freedom Book Bill Evans - Sunday at Village Vanguard & Explorations Coleman Hawkins - Hawk Flies High Lennie Niehaus (All five volumes - Quintet, Octet, Quartet etc) Clark Terry - In Orbit Box sets: Sonny Rollins (Riverside & Prestige), Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy and Thelonious Monk. wolff Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 No Gene Ammons yet? I'd get "Blue Gene" just for Hip Tip. Also, Adderly's "Know What I Mean?". Bole Sete's Tour de Force would be another I'd recommend. Quote
Spontooneous Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 Elmo Hope Trio (the one originally on Contemporary) Thad Jones (the one originally on Debut) Art Pepper -- Smack Up Gigi Gryce and the Jazz Lab Quintet Mal Waldron -- Mal 1 Dizzy Reece -- Asia Minor Benny Carter -- Jazz Giant Art Farmer -- Portrait of Art The Jaki Byard Experience (plus everything everybody else has mentioned) Quote
Philip Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 (edited) What is the significance of sixty days? I'd also prioritize the four Walt Dickerson Prestige dates; their "limited edition" status might finally start to count for something, unfortunately. The Jaki Byard sequence is a must too in my view. jazzbo Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 I think he's referring to the possible completion of the deal to sell Fantasy to Concord. Quote
Bill Nelson Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 I thought it was Concord that was on the skids -- slashing prices and dumping catalog. Most of their 'new' releases are slight repackages assembled around hokey themes and pretenses. Carl Jefferson must be spinning -- and I don't mean records. Quote
