  1. actually, the old Columbia Jazz Masterpieces are fixable, because the mastering engineer screwed them up in an analog way, fortunately - but it takes a LOT of EQ to bring them back to life. '
  2. strange coincidence - I was listening to her for the first time, this morning, on youtube. she's great - a little calm for my tastes (I like a solo to sound like it's the last solo the soloist will ever play before they die) but she's excellent.
  3. I was told they were using the previous mastering - who knows? Though I could tell by listening to the RCA cuts -
  4. I was informed that this new thing will have no new mastering - that they are taking the cuts from prior reissues - now, the last RCA of Armstrong that came out had some weird digital noise-reduction breathing (because it was old technology; one program that was used at the time had this tendency; you can hear the same thing on the Sony Emmett Miller) -
  5. yeah, Affinity was Charlie. And they did incredible on work on Armstrong, King Oliver, Johnny Dodds, and Freddy Keppard.
  6. I think it's something like "Armstrong and the Blues Singers."
  7. it actually sounded better on the old Charly box, though I don't know if you can find it anymore.
  8. that's the way it always happens, and he's absolutely right. The festivals get bigger and bigger, the locals get bupkis, and the festival turns to crap.
  9. also, people like Bley, Hall Overton, Teddy Charles, et al, were looking beyond chord changes in the '50s - and George Russell was doing this in the '40s.
  10. there's lots of very fine Bunk, and even some of the off stuff is indicative of what was once a major talent. but to get the full impact you'll have to wait for my next CD, which contains a Bunk Johnson Suite.
  11. Bob Neloms.
  12. it's funny, because I recognize Dizzy's number; I had to call him once, and it took about 25 calls before he was home. Lorraine (his wife) was very sweet on those prior 25 calls.
  13. great mic, I've had it for a while and it is excellent, particularly for brass (as a matter of fact I recorded Roswell Rudd once with this mic) - I'm just not doing much recording these days, so it's going. New these are around $399, $200 plus shipping, My paypal is alowe5@maine.rr.com send me an email at allenlowe5@gmail.com
  14. Larry - I seem to recall you indicating that you had some reservations about the Kelley/Monk book - would you care to elaborate? Unless you did this already somewhere else -
  15. well, than, we can understand American history from listening to Tea Party members -
  16. well, it may very well be "based on it," in the sense that he got the idea from How High, if he did. Some things are just based on the idea of something, not necessarily the substance.
  17. Miles was an a-hole, no question. I wanna here the Sonny Berman solo -

    Sonny Sharrock

I find a lot of the later Sharrock as posted on his web site to be weirdly and dully slick.
  19. given that I once heard Barry Harris describe Jimmy Rainey as being in the same musical league as Bird, I'm a bit surprised he would claim Green as the greatest.
  20. Duke Ellington. Queen's Suite. Afro Eurasian. Duets with Ray Brown.
  21. I agree with Paul. It's a bizarre thing for them to do. Or maybe you should rate everything one star higher than you think it deserves. That way when they cut the rating, it will be closer to your intention.
  22. just mentioning her new digs; I couldn't see Jim's photos -
