  1. in that pic with the upside-down trumpeter, looks like Joe Dimaggio on the right, on tenor.
  2. I've had many dealings with Craig over the last 15 years - accurate and honest.
  3. Zieff first called me because he was trying to put together a band to play some of this work in New Haven - it never happened, unfortunately; then he called me 2 or three times afterwards to talk (mostly to complain about a critic who was a friend of mine) -
  4. Viva Herb!
  5. Paul Whiteman. IMHO one of the truly great pop-jazz orchestras.

    Wes and Liza

good point. Still, I'll bet that in the minds of '60s tv networks as they saw the Southern audience and sponsors, they were not as far apart as you might think. It was one thing to express the private persona of master and black woman slave; another to flaunt it on TV.

interesting - the Pet Clark/Belafonte thing happened in '68. Good for Bob Hope. It's amazing how much things have changed.
  8. this cop felt he was being dissed, not threatened - which right away tells me he is in the wrong job. Years ago a cop on the New Haven force told me, the one thing you have to learn on that job is, no matter what anyone says to you, don't take it personally. Otherwise, he told me, you're in the wrong line of work.
  9. Zieff was still around, as of 15 or so years ago - when I was in New Haven he used to call me periodically about various things. He was living in Pennsylvania. Don't know if he's still alive.

    Wes and Liza

not exactly a career highlight for Wes, musically speaking. If it was Kenny G we'd all be saying how sad it is. the only noteworthy thing about that clip, historically speaking, is that she's actually touching him - which was still a problem in the '60s for black and white performers. Remember when Pet Clark wasn't allowed to touch - can't remember - was it Harry Belafonte?
  11. you know I caught a lot of flack here a few years back when I said the same thing about Valerie Ponomarev (spelling?). He got hurt when he resisted some airport security guards.
  12. well, by that rationale we should let anyone do anything, I just think this guy needs to be called to order.
  13. on the other hand, what the hell do I know?
  14. funny, because someone posted that Ortega was NOT the soloist on that cut, that it was Gryce - which it was not. I just spoke on the phone with Ortega, who confirmed that it was he on that alto. Extremely nice man.
  15. I disagree. People need to be held accountable. There's probably ways you can file an internal complaint against this guy. You can cause him major inconvenience. Make him think twice next time. Don't listen to these guys. They're too rational.
  16. go to court and tell them exactly what happened - get that cop on the witness stand. Make him tell the truth or commit perjury, You can at least have the satisfaction of inconveniencing him for a few hours. also, there's gotta be some Lefty lawyer you can talk to who might be able to help. After all, you're in NYC. I'd rep you myself if I was in town, I've beaten the cops in court 2-3 times in the last 10 years in Portland; only traffic stuff, but I saved myself about $800 in fines. I'm good at this stuff. It's easy to make these guys look stupid.
  17. Lester Young's nickname for Earl Warren (who, was, btw, a great soloist in his later years) was "white folks." There's a Cadence interview with Warren in which he talks about the whole skin color issue and clearly shows a lot of hurt in regard to his being considered less than black. The whole subject can get really strange and even a little bizarre,
  18. that's an idea, Chris - Schwimmer may play the Continuum, which I am told is a new kind of electronic instrument.
  19. the older I get the less I like cops - lazy and incompetent. Do you know about the case of the woman who was framed by the guy who raped her? The cops screwed it up royally. Typical.
  20. I made my first recording there with my little high school group; maybe 1969.
  21. late additions: Rob Schwimmer (maybe) and Dean Bowman.
  22. if you can, on Jazz wax, listen to the solo Ortega plays on that cut with Clifford Brown and Gigi Gryce - there's an absolute gem of an alto solo, a perfect thing, gorgeously melodic, I'd almost forgotten how great he is.
  23. Pete - I don't know Ross. Will have to check him out. one of the more interesting things is that my prime contacts for this project have been made through - Facebook,. don't know if you guys know William Gay; great Southern writer, there's 2 movies from his books. He seems to like my work, and he's going to read something for this project.
  24. oh, I like the sound of that. Thanks for suggesting.
  25. well, we're probably going to do one long session. But I can probably sneak you in, if you want. BTw - left out two important participants: William Gay, the novelist, is going to read something for the CD; and Curt Hasselbring will be on trombone.
