  1. I gotta admit I try constantly to listen - the problem with most of these groups, to me, is that they play too clean - it's like roots music for people who haven't really listened to roots music. Too slick, the articulation is wrong, the language is wrong - the best of it sounds to me like they listened about as far back as The Band - and I love The Band, but the Band was already The Band, if you know what I mean. Time to go back to Fiddlin' John Carson, Kelly Harrell, Clarence Ashley, B.F. Shelton..... And ironically or not, the techniques of post '60s free jazz will get you there faster than slicked-out bluegrass. Mindy sounds ok, but like about 12 other singers I've heard. All this is, of course, just my opinion. And one guy I like a lot is Eric Royer, from Boston, but that's about it.
  2. at his next concert, I'm handing out air horns and New Years Eve noisemakers. and making sure I eat a lot of beans before-hand. funny thing is I haven't listened to Jarrett in years - though one of the first albums I ever owned was the Fillmore one with Charles Lloyd. And one night I was driving near Hartford and heard the most exquisite version of Stella By Starlight ever. And it was Jarrett. so one never knows..................................................
  3. I second this. Matt is one of the most creative musicians working today.
  4. look, your bulimia is between you and your shrink - and don't compare Jarret to Bud. THAT makes ME wanna heave. and as Dan said, it's attitude, not accompanying sounds, that were talking about. And Bud was a nice guy, a drunk, but nice (as told to me by Walter Bishop). and if Jarret could play like Powell, I wouldn't care if he played with his thumb up his butt (though the next pianist might) -
  5. thanks, Marcello, I am truly appreciative - will contact you tonight or tomorrow -
  6. I think we should all buy tickets to the next Jarrett concert, bring our flash cameras, cough incessantly and take pictures continually. Anybody out there with me on this? I'm ready.
  7. I did not know that. That's good. thanks -
  8. will I win a night with Kenny G? if so, I'm sorry, I don't pet on the first date - unless there's flowers, a lot of food, several illegal substances, and a large gratuity.
  9. does anyone have pics of: 1) Curley Russell 2) Anthony Braxton 3) Andy Shapiro 4) Tommy Potter that they own the rights to and might let me use?
  10. I love Nellie Lutcher - I once compared her piano playing to a pinball game -
  11. "Not to mention that there has been MUCH worse stuff than Jarrett's ego trips perpetrated by many of the departed and still living jazz artists whose assess are regularly kissed around here. " I kiss no one's ass - just maybe an occasional peck on the cheek -
  12. I'm thinking that his whole asshole bit is half of what attracts an audience - the other half is the chance to see him engaged in coitus with the keyboard. Chuck was right - though I've heard that, in order to last longer Jarrett thinks about baseball - that's why, at the moment of greatest musical passion, he often yells "slide! slide!"
  13. I always thought he was just having sex while playing the piano -
  14. 1) skiing 2) ice fishing 3) snow-man building 4) freezing your a** off 5) starting the car
  15. the theme song to the film "Out of Africa" (as sung by Mel Brooks): "Africa.... won't someone get me out of Africa?"
  16. My Little Zulu Babe - by Williams and Walker
  17. years ago I did some sound work for Venus on some reissues - a very slick pianist named Smith (can't remember the first name, was not Gene) and I think a Joe Albany, and a Walter Bishop. The original sources they usually gave me, as I recall, were pretty terrible (sounded like needle drops on Lps in very bad shape). I don't know if the stuff was ever issued.
  18. 1) Dan - got me into Baby Face Willette - though it's the real early stuff and I can't find anything else like it in his ouevre (and Dan - sorry I haven't answered your last message - running ragged this week, will reply this weekend) - 2) Ron S - got me into necrophilia, bestiality, and beating up tourists. But I guess that's a little off-topic.
  19. I believe he had a hit record which I owned as a child - Jingle Jangle (I think it was a 78, not sure).
  20. now THERE would be a group.
  21. you know, when Benny Carter turned 80 everybody said "better run out and hear him before it's too late" - which I did, and then what does he do? Live another 15 years! I'm gonna wait for the 90th. Maybe by then Sonny'll fire that god-awful band.
  22. after doing some research (and hearing you guys' comments) I've decided to cancel the order - though more for the way the eye office pressured me than for anything else (the optometrist was a real schmuck and made, I realized later, some very contradictory comments). I may still do it, but am going elsewhere for now.
  23. actually, Dolby SR is the best noise reduction there is. Pristine. Waves EQs, which I use, are incredibly good. So who knows....
