  1. very busy on this - is now going to be 36 CDs, about 900 cuts, covering essentially 1913-1960. I've mastered about 850 pieces so far, will probably end up mastering about 1200 and than will cut to 900 - still need to write the notes, which will be relatively short; trying to put together a companion book proposal. Finding some terrific things including, dare I say, Nazi propaganda swing tunes, with a version of Stormy Weather in which the singer recites: "Mr. Churchill: don't know why/there are so many German planes up in the sky/because you're losing" - I'm including everything from classical to rags to early punk-type rock to those Nazis to a notable crossdresser (Billy Tipton) - should be interesting - documentary is proceeding as well - going to NYC in two weeks to film myself playing duets with Matt Shipp and Roswell Rudd. Mildy panicked as I have to write the music post-haste (a Morton-like blues for Matt; a holler-type blues for Roswell.)
  2. you guys really find this stuff to be that interesting? Just listening through about 3 of the tunes posted on the Amsterdam records site - ok, but does not really justify any strong sense that he's the new anti-big band-big band. I've heard more interesting large group writing in a few places (like Hemphill's band CD from maybe 20-25 years ago) - this is a bit new-agey, to my ears -
  3. who is this guy and why have I never heard of him? His spirit reminds me of Jaki Byard - listening to the clips on his web site - wow-
  4. just wanted to mention that I knew Carmen back in the 1990s and took some lessons with him and he was one of the nicest people I ever knew. Also one of the greatest saxophonists - he released a few self-produced LPs way back, with a bad flute player, but on which his alto playing was phenomenal, some of the best post-bop playing I've EVER heard. Brilliant stuff, and I'm very saddened by this death -
  5. fine - I'm going to go take my meds -
  6. good for you and good for them - as we know from the Reagan/Bush/Bush years, the majority are always right -
  7. bite me Dan, back to your old habits- you don't like my posts? Who gives a shit?
  8. well, you may be right..........................................
  9. I actually did not like Couw, but that puts me in the minority here - a better title for the new forum would be Feuds and Grudges -
  10. c'mon, leave it behind, Cliff - if I can forgive Hitler, I can also forgive you (maybe) -

CLiff - see my prior post -
  12. "I don't care for Hitler jokes either, and I don't think it's a cultural thing." come on, Aggie87 - you're gonna have to leave all this behind you - on the other hand, I'll make a deal - you forgive me, and I'll forgive Hitler -
  13. no wonder he left - nobody could pronounce his name - as I recall he didn't like my Hitler jokes, and as I look back this may be another of those cultural things - for Jews, Hitler/Nazi jokes are a form of retaliation and reparation. Nothing personal, at least not toward this generation -
  14. well, my GPS sends me in circles - but I'm just not cut out to be Dukakis (or Kerry) -
  15. I agree in principle but just wait until you are the object of such things - it is really not something that anyone would ignore - but as I said I agree (in principle) - however I am not going to be Mike Dukakis -
  16. happy to agree - but damn you JAW, you say shut it down AFTER you make a snide remark about ME being one of the well-known ones - damn hypocrite - you really are completely out of line - and I am NOT going to stop saying it -

the problem, somewhat, is that engineers don't know how to record Barry, IMHO - he has a delicate yet slightly percussive attack. Back in the 1970s I heard him more than any other pianist, at Bradley's, Jimmy, Angry Squire, et al, and to hear him in person was to truly appreciate his very personal adaptation to Monk and Bud - Barry is/was truly one of the last of the great jazz charismatics - the closest I have heard on recordings to what he sounds like on a good night are the Xanadu CD he did with Sonny Criss; also Preminado on Riverside, done on a bad piano - still nothing matches that night back at the Angry Squire back in 1970-something; I brought Percy France to meet Barry, he was gonna sit in, but Barry was so on Percy didn't want to interrupt - the other amazing night was ALSO at the Angry Squire, right after Monk's death; nothing but Monk Tunes, amazing amazing - best story was when Barry came up to New Haven around 1978 and did a concert for me - as we were leaving, who walks up the stairs, having missed the concert - but Bill Evans! His wife was a friend of mind and he had rushed down, but it was over. They embraced, and Barry later told me they used to both use the RIverside practice room - and at Evans' funeral Barry told me that was the last time he saw him -
  18. "some of them have launched petty and personal attacks on others as well, which sometimes resulted in nasty exchanges, bad feelings and a negative atmosphere." I certainly hope, JAW, that, assuming I know what you are referring to, you know the full history and the prior posts - because what you've said above is, otherwise, shockingly uninformed - and somewhat strange, since you want certain feuds to end, yet keep referring to them, endlessly provoking responses - unless, of course, you are referring to something entirely different - in which case you need to do more than hint in ways which do nothing but imply -
  19. all I will say is that there is a reason that people who are either well-known and/or who have active public profiles tend to stay away from bulletin boards like this. I have seen it more than once, in other places; they become targets for certain kinds of petty attacks. Now, that does not happen much here, but it does happen. And it is not a good thing. and Weizen, don't hate me because I'm beautiful -
  20. Aggie, you needed to make that request after Cliff's response, not mine -
  21. "Yes, and you would think that this would be obvious, however some people treat this place like their own personal blogs." tell us who, Cliff.
  22. meant to indicate, JAW, that I am in complete sympathy with Chris - he can post what he wants to post, people may disagree, but already, in this thread, there have been several personal attacks. I am feeling much the same way recently -
  23. sorry to hear about this but I am in complete sympathy - and Big Al and Rockefeller Center, unneccessary comments and part of the problem -
  24. sorry to hear it Al, time to call Father Flotsky - hope everything resolves well, the police tend to follow the path of least resistance (best comment I ever got was from the former police Chief of a big city where I used to work - "wanaa know the laziest f'ing people in the world? Cops -" he told me). on the other hand, a good lawyer will make 'em put up or shut up. I'd be happy to call mine, as soon as he graduates -
  25. yes - to above - there is an amazing sing-talk thing she did - if I ever finish my '50s book, it has a bit on that performance - I'm going to add - I've never been a big fan of the Overton band-Monk concert - neither Monk nor Overton, I've always thought, and a poor integration of some of the horn soloists, who just seem to blow, counter to the whole sense of Monk. just my opinion -
