  1. I know the problem - goes in different ways; when certain musicians I knew well died I couldn't listen to their stuff for some time (but that's a different thing than what you're going through) - I have also gone through a bit of musical burnout, related to Devilin Tune (just too much music to experience with the resulting musical version of PTSD) - one cure (or treatment) is to find oddball and SHORT recordings that are extremely expressive - for me it was 1920s African American gospel of the mad, anarchic kind - short and sweet, people screaming and yelling - cathartic for them AND me. Also certain 1960s rock and roll (try the Animals, or anything by Mike Bloomfield) - but old strange things work best - maybe 1930s Turkish recordings - or singing/yelling preachers -
  2. first you're gonna have to find some Gregorians -
  3. c'mon Chuck, we know you're out there getting older -
  4. they do, indeed, look like their sinuses are clear -
  5. actually, if we want to bring personalities into this, my least favorite drummer is Jack Dejohnette because he was very nasty to me once -
  6. creepy and disturbing - but not as creepy and disturbing as the album Hot Dog -
  7. on the other hand I love French crullers and just saw "Breathless" -
  8. all right, you guys, this is going on for too long; as an historian I will answer the original question: 14 if you don;t count beating up women -
  9. don't fret, I haven't a clue either but I think it involves human sacrifice and a cult of Satanic worship around the album Hot Dog -
  10. nah, don't worry about that stuff - just have them put it in a big box and mark it "salmon."
  11. well, if I had to choose music or strange sex...... anybody want to buy a saxophone?
  12. might try Paris, but I hate those damn sauces - also, still pissed off that those damned French wouldn't come into Iraq with us -
  13. interesting - and there are, of course, the famous Ashville Sessions, early country music recordings made by Victor - and yes, Jazzshrink, Boston is a leading contender, depending on price and jobs -
  14. yes, both coasts are a problem - probably too hot for me in Texas, though -
  15. Don Shlitten to me, circa 1976 (after I had recounted to him my meeting with Tristano): "You know I always defended Lennie, told people this was the new thing, but he was just the meanest guy, did himself in."
  16. I thought it was Porky and Bess -
  17. I am definitely at the point where I eat, drink, sleep and dream music - to the point of desperation; comes of internal and external debates about what to do what to do; going over old theoretical debates (about all arts , not just music); also comes of feeling that my moment has passed -
  18. some good ideas - like that ocean view, Weizen - am also putting together a new resume with academic aims; it's still a long shot, absent a PHD and given some of my prior problems with academia. Will look into both Ann Arbor and Madison -
  19. have the answer: Maine sucks; need a place to live out my remaining active years with people I like and a cultural scene that is hospitable - also have the other answer; I know what I like to do; need a place where I can do it -
  20. the wife and I have had it with this godforsaken state of provincial cultural retards - in three years my daughter will graduate high school, and we wanna be outta here - question is, where to? Gotta find jobs (getting old, both of us are post-55) gotta be able to afford housing (our own home is appreciating nicely, but depends where we wanna go) - I'm thinking I could donate my large American music collection somewhere and follow it (a tricky proposition, I know) - have heard Philly is nice - thinking the Boston area, not sure if I can afford it - wouldn't mind teaching somewhere, but once again that could be difficult - so whatta youse people think?
  21. how about Descent into the Maelstrom?
  22. my favorite: The Organissimo Snuff Thread, in a which a new member was murdered each week - too bad they had to stop when the FBI got involved -
  23. took the words right outta my mouth - I've always been convinced that Tristano's rep has suffered primarily because he was a nasty, foul-mouthed, arrogant s.o.b - and unafraid to show it - sorta the Jim Jones of his time -
