  1. some of it -
  2. I think it sounds better and, honestly, you'd be surprised at how relatively little effort it took to improve this thing - CEDAR is a powerful tool when used for good and not for evil - I'm quite shocked that Sony let it be released the way it did -
  3. I used the first cut - Don't Be that Way - I will add that one good thing about things being issued the way Schaap issued this is that no restoration is better than BAD restoration - with digital work, once somthing is gone it's gone - you cannot rid it of digital distortion, you cannot being back highs that have been digitally removed - so in this way, at the very least, Schaap has left us a good archival copy of the concert - I'm thinking about this because I've been listening to some REALLY bad work done by Proper - obvious distortion, that underwater gargling effect from bad hiss-reduction - this is MUCH worse than anything Phil has done -
  4. I look forward to it - if you'd like to try that first, let's give it a go -
  5. I do it a little differently - I go from an external CD player with a digital output through an EQ to begin with - so it will have to function intially as an audio CD -
  6. don't worry, I'll supply the blank - just email me your address at alowe@maine.rr.com and I'll get one out this week - Chuck - I'll send you one this week - I haven't heard the re-do - does it sound like they worked from Schaap's original?
  7. one more question - will the data CDR play in a conventional CD player?
  8. it's always better to have the original source, and I use custom-made styli as well as an audiophiole turntable - however, I understand your nervousness - I would be happy to work from a CDR that's unprocessed (be aware, however, that when converted to 78 there was definitely some generational shift, depending on the quality of internal converters, etc.; even with top-notch equipment this results in some loss). As I said, I understand your nervousness with this one-of-a kind source - just let me know what you want to do -
  9. I'm putting this in the artist's area, though I know that some might argue that it's for audio - at any rate, thanks to Big Al, who sent me his copy, I was able to work on the much argued-about Benny Goodman at Carnegie Hall CD, with Phil Schaap's purist approach to restoration. I've done a bit of work on it tonight, and even I'm surprised at how much better it sounds - interestingly enough, not only does CEDAR really remove a lot of the noise wihohut diminishing the music, I found that Phil did a very bad job at one crucial step of the re-mastering process - EQ. A major reason this CD sounds so medicre is that it's so poorly EQ'd - I boosted the bass about 6 DB, added some midrange, and voila - got the rhythm section back, heard more Benny, more orchestra. I'm putting together a CDR with three cuts: cut 1 is the original, cut two is with one step of noise reduction (de-clicking/crackling, some de-hiss) and cut 3 is with a bit more hiss reduction added -I tend to be very conservative in these things. There is nothing that will eliminate all hiss, and there is some nice ambient sound in those higher frequencies. But I figured everyone can make their own judgement. I'm happy to mail a CDR to anyone interested - email me at alowe@maine.rr.com and I'll put one in the mail -
  10. actually, Dan, I'll need it as a CDR as my internet computer is not connected to my audio computer - also, do you know when you'll be mailing the 78?
  11. that's fine, just give me the unprocessed one sped up to 78 on a CDR, if possible - that compressed sound won't really change a lot with EQ - I tend to be conservative in my restorations, as hiss reduction is problematic (takes a lot of music out and can leave some odd sounds) - but, anyway, look forward to receiving the 78 -
  12. just listened to your files, Dan - I would say a little too much processing on the second one, so please be sure to keep the straight transfer, as, if the post office (GOD FORBID!) loses the 78 I could still work with that one - nice thing about CEDAR is that it doesn't have that compressed quality and does not leave any artifacts - looking forward to doing this - and let me add that I'm about to post (probably later tonight) a thread about the Benny Goodman at Carnegie Hall concert, for which I will be taking one tune and applying some CEDAR restoration to show what can be done - (also, I'll make an extra CDR or two for Gene's widow - let me know how many extra copies you need) -
  13. should be interesting to see what it sounds like here - I'll put it through the VPI and try a few different styli with the CEDAR - Dan,can you include a CDR of the transfer you did (unless you've mailed it already) -
  14. make that a 20% surcharge -
  15. HIGGINBOTHAM! A giant and one of my favorites - interesting piece of trivia, courtesy of Roswell Rudd, and something that surprised me a bit - Rudd told me that Higginbotham was extremely well versed in the classical literature, and played transcriptions of classical pieces (Bach, etc) to warm up -
  16. mention Organissimo and get a 20% discount -
  17. I think it's who you know - kind of like the FBI's 10 most wanted list -
  18. I love Frishberg's piano playing as well - a very personal interpretation of Earl Hines, as I see it - he's also on one of my favorite albums, which came up recently, Jimmy Rushing's The You and me That Used to Be -
  19. I'm sure Valdo would be flattered - it's from Switchboard, anyway, to which some 20 million people have access - I have called several times but no answer - will work on it this week -
  20. the planning of solos was, I think, quite common in the swing era - listen to a lot of Duke's studio stuff and broadcast recordings -
  21. I wasn't presenting it as an edict - only an interesting comment by a major musician who was also a peer of John Lewis's -
  22. oh, and couw - thanks for this one: "this is too stupid. just listen to the music and forget about all the shit the artists said and some on this board seem all too eager to repeat. buy more records. " That's truly in the spirit of intellectual curiousity - no sense thinking about it - just buy the stuff -
  23. interesting quote from Litweiler - I'd like to hear more on that theme -
  24. the Russell book is, indeed well written; it's just that I've talked to a few of the people who were witness and or participants to events depicted in the bio, and they, to a man, said that it was virtually all invented by Russell (I am speaking of Howard McGhee, Al Haig, Curley Russell, Duke Jordan, and Tommy Potter) -
  25. well, since they're talking about basketball, it should be Big Bird -
