  1. Bought from them recently online. Why can't Britain still support a shop like that? I'll say it this way: why can“t Madrid support a shop like that? This means the British equivalent would have to be in Manchester. Good!
  2. Wynton was probably at his best in the Davis rhythm section with Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. IMHO they never sounded better than on Davis's At the Blackhawk albums. I also like them backing Art Pepper on his Together Again.

  5. Wise words, paps! Not for nothing did Whitney Balliett call his book on jazz The Sound of Surprise.

    Russ Freeman

I always think of Lenny Bruce's line, "Russ Freeman stole all my key men." I think it was from his Dracula sketch.

  10. Even the greatest stuff palls with overexposure. For me, the greatest recordings ever are by Parker on Savoy and Dial, the Herman Four Brothers herd and the Miles Davis nonet, but as I've been listening to them for half a century, the magic isn't there anymore. The answer for me has been to move on to other stuff which I never listened to in the old days; e.g. the Tristano school and West Coast cool.

  14. With you on that, Richard! Supposed to be an eighties novel, but I only read it a couple of years ago and thought it was great! Also liked Wolfe's A Man in Full and I Am Charlotte Simmons.

A great favorite of mine - basically a school-of-Bud Powell player with Silverish overtones plus a characteristically West Coast staccato attack. And he could cook, too! Of his work on "Popo" on The Artistry of Pepper (Pacific Jazz) liner note writer Todd Selbert remarks: "Dig Freeman chewing up the keyboard and swinging his fanny off on the first take."

  25. Just finished reading M J Hyland's three novels - How the Light Gets In, Carry Me Down and This Is How - because she's a friend of my daughter's.
