  22. Welcome back, MG. Speaking of Fela, I was in a taxicab in Philadelphia last night, and I saw the cabbie's ID - his name was Femi, like Fela's son. When we got to our destination, I said "Adupe" to him ("thank you" in Yoruban). You should have seen his jaw drop open when I said that. He looked at me and said - "Ok stop, when did you live in Nigeria??" I told him I had never been there, and his amazement deepened further. I reminded him that he was supposed to say "Ashe" or "Oshe" in return, and he started laughing. He said "you said Thank You to me in my language, and I say "You're Very Welcome" in yours". We shook hands, and he drove off with a huge smile. Nice story!

  24. The British novelist and science fiction enthusiast Kingsley Amis wrote a powerful story in which a space flight, described from the point of view of the "astronauts" inside the vehicle, proves to have been an illusion. It is revealed at the end that they have never taken off and have been the victims of an inhumane psychological experiment by an authoritarian regime. It's in Collected Short Stories of Kingsley Amis. Try the one called "Something Strange"; that's probably it.
