  2. That's a good un!
  3. If jazz includes blues, this may have been the first:
  4. I saw him in the Giants of Jazz package with Dizzy, Stitt, Monk, McKibbon and Blakey in 1971.
  5. The recent sad departure of Irish guitarist Louis Stewart leaves Dave as the leading jazz guitarist in this part of the world IMO.
  6. Dave Cliff was a friend in the late 1960s when we were both students in Leeds, I at the University, Dave on the pioneering Jazz and Light Music course at the College of Music where he was taught by Tristano veteran Peter Ind. I renewed the friendship with Dave at a concert in Manchester in 1984 when he was playing in a sextet of Jimmy Deuchar, Johnny Griffin, Slide Hampton, Peter Ind and Al Levitt. Probably his greatest moment on record was when he recorded in Scandinavia with Konitz, Marsh and Ind. I believe he's still playing, but he never seems to have gigs in the north of England, which is a pity as I'd love to hear him again.
