Sounds like my sort of music! I've seen both Magnarelli and Smulyan in the UK, though not together. Ray and Lockwood are favourite accompanists of Greg Abate, a regular visitor.

Yes, time flies in jazz, as in everything else. I remember the late Jack Massarik (who was to become jazz correspondent of the London Evening Standard) saying to me of some Getz/Haig/Raney tracks when we were students: "It's amazing to think this music is almost TEN YEARS OLD!!!" I'll leave it to you pundits to work out the date of that utterance.

Saw that article and had a brief listen on Spotify to a couple of the groups the youngsters are digging and "Ugh!" Perhaps it's my age or perhaps my taste has been ruined by listening to Pres, Bird, Trane, etc.

Prime Tubby. Sensational technical command by this stage and no sign yet of the health-induced decline of later years. Unlike some recently discovered live material, this studio date has superb sound.
