  1. Saw the band in Southport, UK shortly after they made this album. Great stuff!
  2. Now listening to:
  3. YouTube recording quickly found. So interesting! Only a year before Trane was to be heard with Miles and you can hear the way he was going. The influence of Hodges on him is also evident, particularly in the second number.
  4. Now playing:
  5. No more to say.
  6. I met Clark Terry at a gig six years ago and told him I'd been reading biographies of British jazz musicians. He said there'd be another coming out - of his Dad - and he'd be writing it. I promised to buy a copy. Yes, it's very good. Stan, a very introverted character, seems to have kept detailed diaries throughout much of his life. Very useful for a biographer!
  7. as a background to my current reading:
  8. Me too. Would that have been the Carla Bley Orch with Gary Valente, Lew Soloff and Lewis Nash?
  9. When he signed an album for me and Ed Dipple, Champion Jack said, "That's a good one. I made that in Germany". Of course, the expat thing was very good news for me. Those I saw included: Lucky Thompson Dexter Gordon Johnny Griffin Ben Webster Don Byas Jimmy Woode Kenny Clarke Philly Joe Benny Bailey Phil Woods
  10. Yes, v handy for Manchester gigs.
  11. Many years ago I saw this documentary film about expatriate American jazz musicians in Europe. I remember brilliant playing by Phil Woods. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3492952/ Pleased the album includes a bluesman. Two blues expatriates I met in the 70s were Champion Jack (in Manchester) and Memphis Slim (in Paris).
