  1. My current read and fascinating stuff, too. Spotted in the window of my local Oxfam shop last week.
  2. Just to change direction for a moment ...
  3. Agreed. Now playing:
  4. On the same tour local jazz presenter Graham Brook is pitting him against Gilad Atzmon. That should be some gig, providing of course that that those out to stop Gilad's appearances don't get there first!
  5. Thanks Ken. Have just bought the Willie Ruff used for £2. Just my sort of price! Some excellent books mentioned so far. I would add Horace Silver's Let's Get to the Nitty Gritty, Peter Leitch's Off the Books, Ted Hershon's Norman Granz, Chris Smith's The View from the Back of the Band on Mel Lewis and Cohen and Fitzgerald's Rat Race Blues on Gigi Gryce. Here you are!
  6. Close association and mutual respect I would say. Monk wrote "In Walked Bud" and Bud recorded Monk's "Off Minor". (I'm sure there are other examples.) And then there was that run in with the police over possession where both of them were involved (as well as the baroness).
  7. The Duvivier and Reig look very interesting, but over here they cost about £60 (about $75) each! I've had the Klinkowitz for many years and see it's now obtainable for £2. I'm sure I didn't pay a great deal more than that for it.
  8. "Something that people dug who otherwise didn't listen to jazz". An interesting topic. I have also come across this in the case of Peterson, as well as Kind of Blue. Any more? Perhaps we should have a topic on this. Re Peterson, I understand your misgivings. I prefer him in piano, guitar, bass format with Kessel and Brown in the early 50s before technique ran away with him.
