My introduction to soprano was via Sidney Bechet playing "Summertime". I read here a few days ago about Trane discussing soprano with Hodges. Of course, there's a line of development there, from Bechet to Hodges to Trane.

The Impulse Coltrane is a seriously underrated album IMHO. A musician friend of mine who certainly knew his stuff used to name it as his favorite Coltrane album. (Mine is Crescent BTW.)
