Zoot was THE first at Ronnie's. Unfortunately I didn't get to see him. The earliest of the visitors whom I saw was Lucky Thompson, when Ronnie brought him to Leeds, where I was living at the time. That was the era of excitement about American visitors, prompting Ronnie's promise to bring to the Leeds club a quintet consisting of Stan Getz and Stuff Smith. The excited audience were then told it would be the Getz Stuff quintet. But I know you've heard that one before!
