  4. Round about 1960 when I was 20 I was very taken by the culture of hip. There was jazz, of course, but also John Cassavetes's film Shadows and Jack Gelber's play The Connection. Right into this category fitted Albee's The Zoo Story which was a huge influence, and a very fine little play, too P.S. Have just discovered in my record collection a vinyl album on Spoken Arts called Mark Richman & William Daniels in The Zoo Story by Edward Albee. Must give it a replay!

  15. Just read McEwan's much-hyped latest, which I ordered from the public library. As always, clever but slight. I never feel I want to buy copies of his books to keep.

Yes, age is relevant here, also in that the middle-aged and elderly (as for example your cinema foyer couple) are less familiar with the conventions of device use in public than the young, who have grown up with it. On public transport, which I ride every day, the only intrusive conversations I ever hear are from the no-longer-young.Of course, the shyness of adolescence also plays a part in this, but also the near universal switch among the young to silent programs like WhatsApp for communicating.
