  1. I now regret that I passed up the opportunity of seeing the MJQ. When I was young they, together with the Brubeck quartet, had a massive appeal to people who didn't like Bird, Diz, Bud and Monk, so for for me they weren't cool. As for the Brubeck quartet with Desmond, they came here so often, I just couldn't avoid them and ended up seeing them three times in three different cities! Fortunately, the Ellington band came just as often and I was there every time!
  2. That's a nice one! Now playing:
  3. Just as well I didn't write Kinny.
  4. The 1940s Navarro/Dameron and Bud Powell albums are my favorites. I also particularly like Whistle Stop with those beautiful Dorham compositions and the combination of Kenny, Hank, Philly and Paul.
  5. A great collection!
  6. A big favorite! To be paired with this:
  7. Yes, loads of references, including a page on the Cambridge antics! You'll have to read it.
  8. Now playing: Apart from the music, I also dig the titles: "Sorry Wrong Rhumba", "Life with Feather", "Bebop's Fables", "Nothing but Denzil Best", "Bop Look and Listen", "Good to the Last Bop".
  9. I met Hughes briefly in 1984 at a course on teaching creative writing. He seemed very approachable. Is your uncle mentioned in the Hughes biography?
  10. Sad about Sempé, and about Paul. His absence from the board has certainly not been filled by recent arrivals.
