  1. Yes, a superb series, Bev. Heard a very good one with NHOP last week; looking forward to one on Oliver Nelson on Friday.

  8. http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/aug/14/eric-delaney-obituary?INTCMP=SRCH Very sorry to hear this, particularly as I discovered that the sharp looking old guy sitting next to me on the back row at the Wigan Jazz Festival a couple of years ago was Eric. I recall that when the onstage drummer didn't seem exactly on the ball, Eric was slapping out the beat on his knees!

  12. Bill Goodwin, together with Tom Harrell, Hal Galper and Steve Gilmore, was part of that great quintet that Phil Woods had for some years in the 1980s. I saw Bill Goodwin with a big band that Phil Woods brought to Wigan about twenty years ago. Sounds like you had a good time last night, Tom!

  16. I first read this in eighth grade. It had a big impact on me then. Less impact in your eighth decade! I'll take your world for that.
  17. Yes, I have a copy of that one by Mike Hennessey too. Never realised he (Klook, that is) was married at one time to Annie Ross ! No mention of marriage so far, just that he got her pregnant when she was 19 and he was 17 years older! As to your copy, I notice Amazon.uk is asking about £75 for a used copy. (Mine's from the public library.)
  18. A fascinating read!

  21. Now that takes me back! I last saw that album in the early 60s, but never heard it. But I did get to see the two hornmen on it - Williams in a package with Thad Jones/Mel Lewis and Leo Wright with a local quartet - both here in Manchester in the late 60s.

  23. Great stuff! When my wife and I go to Southport by train (usually to hear jazz) we go through a station called Meols Cop, which we say must be an anagram. We've never managed to make a satisfactory anagram, but Wordsmith gives the excellent Compel So, Close Mop and Coop Elms.
