  9. Very sad news. Saw him play twice with a forty year gap between - with the Basie band at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester in 1958 and leading a big band at the Wigan Jazz Festival a dozen years ago.
  10. Love it! My Contemporary/Vogue LP has a green croc with black outlines and black lettering on a white background.

  12. This evening I went to a gig hosted by the Bury Jazz Society (a name to conjure with) It was their annual gig, as they play records and watch DVDs for the rest of the year A local tenor and trombone quintet was joined by British jazz star Alan Barnes on alto and baritone. A great night's entertainment!

  18. Continuing this great summer for jazz gigs, this afternoon I saw local tenorman Dean Masser with the Gerry Tomlinson trio. Dean's choice of numbers included compositions by Dexter, Mobley, Griffin, Rollins and Stitt, so you know where he's coming from! Very nice listening!

  20. I've had that HMV album (CSD 1605) since 1971. You're just catching up with me, Sidewinder! (Must give it a spin) This one is CLP 1869, Bill. An original from 1965, I think - with the Garrard and Lofthouse sleeve. Sounds very good indeed in the mono, nice balanced sound. Will be comparing it with the US first press on Impulse that I also have (stereo). I also have a UK ABC/Impulse 70s reissue but that doesn't come up to the sonics of the HMV, good though it is. Spun this one for the first time for a long time. Reaction: a masterpiece album, one of the greatest in the music. By this late stage the group were majestic - how far they'd come on since the Atlantic "My Favorite Things" session!

  22. I'm sure I've seen it around at less than £10 recently. Might have been at good ol' Fopp. Great Tubby album ! Not worth it IMO , sound of the CD is poor as I'm sure was discussed here at the time of its release. Yes, I also find the sound a bit lacking, but the music!!! Re sound, I spend quite a bit of time listening to bop sides from the 40s in comparison with which the Tubby is super hi-fi No qualms about the sound on the LP. Both the mono and stereo versions are great ! I thought the concerns re: CD sound were with '100% Proof' and 'Mexican Green' but it sounds as if the whole lot must have been compromised. I suspect that the Japanese Digipacks are better - the one I have of 'Tubbs Tours' is fine. I think my quibbles about the sound relate to the recording, rather than subsequent "editions". The soloists haven't been sufficiently "foregrounded" to make them properly audible with the band roaring behind.
