I listened to discs 2 and 3 again and you know what - I hate to admit it - KV and MG don't bother me at all here. It's a great set (listened to disc 1 a few times a couple of weeks ago) and one of the cornerstones of avant / free / whatever in my opinion; it should actually be listened to in one sitting to fully get the musical picture. It's a shame it's OOP.

Yesterday and today, I've been listening to Peter Brötzmann - Chicago Octet / Tentet - 3CD, Okkadisk I'm not sure yet what to think of this set, it has some great music but also KV and MG - though I find them not as obtrusive and annoying here as on other albums. I'll have to listen to it again. Opinions?
  3. No problems here either.

I have a feeling that your sale list might soon expand. Come on people, some things are sacred. Not for me - except for freedom and democracy, that is, but that's another subject that doesn't belong here

Love is great, but I am not a particulalry big fan of Vandermark. I've bean meaning to chaeck Atomic for some time now, so I'll probably start with the stuff they did without Vandermark... Hmm, I think it's time for me to reassess my Octet / Tentet discs; haven't listened to them for ages. The presence of both Vandermark and Gustafsson might be a bigger problem for me than before...

I've listened to another Jimmy Lyons album tonight, but not very attentively due to circumstances beyond my control: Wee Sneezawee (Black Saint), with Raphe Malik, Karen Borca, William Parker and Paul Murphy. I couldn't stand Malik (no news here), but I loved Borca's playing. Lyons sounded pretty convincing, but again, I wasn't able to listen very attentively. Will have to spin it again.

Funny you should say that, I've also "developed" a big problem with Malik; I didn't like his playing very much at first, but it got worse: I can't listen to him anymore... I'll listen to the set again soon.

The CD number is FMP CD 64 and I got it from Cadence (finally managed to have them charge me a "normal" overseas shipping fee...)

Thanks for the tips, John, but right now (having read Jon's post) I've had enough.

Excellent post, Gökhan. I was going to post a more heated reply, but yours is better.

Please note that I didn't say highly recommended It's definitely not in my (highly virtual and very volatile) personal Top-5. Edit: perhaps I should have said: recommended because of Ellery Eskelin , though that wouldn't be fair to Dennis.

Recommended, with an excellent Ellery Eskelin (though a few tracks are a bit long): Dennis González - NY Midnight Suite - Clean Feed Also recommended, but sadly OOP: Evan Parker / Barry Guy / Paul Lytton - Imaginary Values - Maya
  17. The board's been running slow again the last few days, and very much so today. Lost a post that way earlier today. Storm problems again?

I wouldn't go that far, but I agree that Vintage Duets is the better album. I have a few problems with Back Together Again. To my ears Steve McCall is not only a more interesting player on the former than Hamid Drake on the latter, but, like I said before, Drake's also way too prominent in the mix. Anderson is great on both albums, but on Back... he sometimes sounds a bit tired (for want of a better description), as if he's running around in circles - 'round Drake, that is . I wouldn't want to be without Back..., though.

It is very hard for me to explain. I have a lot of trouble explaining what it is about music such as La Voyelle Liquide that I enjoy so much. It has something to do with mood and atmosphere, something to do with variety within a limited palette of sounds, perhaps something to do with the novelty of the sounds and music created - it is radically different from any other music in my collection and, when in the right mood, I really love listening to this. It is definitely not for everybody and is probably not to most people's tastes, which is fine. I'd advise holding onto the disc for a few months or so and coming back to it. I had a lot of trouble with my first eai disc, The Hands of Caravaggio, but, eventually, everything started to click. Conversely, this music may just not be for you, in which case wait until it if "officially" oop and get the best deal you can for it on ebay. Thanks John.

This is a great album: Fred Anderson & Steve McCall - Vintage Duets - Okkadisk

I found this one not very convincing, but I've only listened to it once and will have to play it again: Georg Graewe / Ernst Reijsiger / Gerry Hemingway - The View from Points West - Music & Arts

It is the variety and structure. It reminded me of solo Cecil a bit, actually. I can understand what you mean by structure, but variety?? I found it one of the most boring and tedious albums I've heard in a long time... I must be missing something, or my ears aren't suited to this kind of improv.

I'd rather not comment on this one - yet: Thomas Lehn & Gerry Hemingway - Tom & Gerry - 2CD, Erstwhile; disc 1
