  1. Scott,

Don't get me wrong, I love The All Seeing Eye; it's right up my alley, from A to Z. My question was a general one, just in case...

I'm interested in most jazz styles (though much swing-style jazz is "not really my cup of tea", it quickly bores me), but I'm a big fan of bop, hard bop, 1960s "advanced hard bop" and modal jazz. Haven't listened much to free jazz / avant garde since my initial interest in it fell into a deep sleep way back in the early 1970s, but I started listening to it again a couple of years ago and now I'm figuring out which albums to add to my humble free / avant garde collection.

  2. Bertrand,

See the first page of this thread re Soul Fountain. I've never heard it, so I can't comment on it; to be honest it doesn't "look" very promising to me - but then again, I'm not a fan of "organ dates" or "dates with organ", to put it mildly.

  3. Or, you could speak your mind and say why you don't like the album in question. That would be far more interesting and would stimulate further opinions and conversation.

Sure, that did cross my mind too, of course, but what if you're absolutely negative about an album? I know, it sounds very negative, but there are albums that I absolutely detest and got nothing positive to say about, such as Donald Byrd's I'm Trying to Get Home and A New Perspective, and it's not my intention to hurt anyone.

  4. Ehem... Thank you all for your comments so far! I suppose I can safely get rid of the Coleman CD. A much as I like the thought of keeping everything, trading is a way to get to hear new albums even when under financial strain. For instance, I traded away a bunch of old useless vinyl (oops! ;) ) for Wayne Shorter's 'Alegria' the other day.

If I'm going to keep anything it might perhaps be 'Illumination' after all. Regarding 'The Rumproller' I'll probably seek out a vinyl copy some day.

I take it you're keeping your Duke Pearson albums... ;)

  5. Anybody heard "Hello Hank Jones"? (This was one of those "direct to disc" LP's, circa 1980)

I've got that one. Haven't listened to it in a long time. In fact, I even forgot that I had it. Thanks for reminding me!

It's a really nice date with Clifford, Hank Jones, Reggie Workman and Freddie Waits. Side 1 is a single tune, "Vienna" and Side 2 is "Bohemia After Dark" and "Love For Sale". There's even a double-sided insert with notes and photos about the recording technology that went into this direct-to-disk session. The only info that's nowhere to be found is the recording date ... weird.

According to the AMG it was recorded in the summer of 1978: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Azad6vwvta9lk

I've never heard it, so I can't comment; the AMG rating is **: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Ajnh1z85a8yvo

  7. Beside the already mentioned Four Horsemen another Mosaic I expect to time out and maybe not even reach the halfway mark would be the mind shattering explosive Bobby Hackett box.

Let's hope it'll self-destruct before it reaches that point...
