I know that there are plenty of folks that genuinely love Van Gelder’s re-masters, so I’ll definitely take a wait-and-see Blue Note SACD stance in the future. I just don’t get it, I just don’t. I think I’ve said just about everything I can without repeating myself. It’s probably best to move on.
Sorry, I don't understand - are you taking a wait-and-see approach because plenty of folks genuinely love RVG’s remasters?
Well, I'm certainly not one of them... err... I don't want to repeat myself either
-
Frankly, I’m so disgusted by this release that I emailed Blue Note.
This looks likely to be another "one-way e-mail"... I'd be very surprised if you'd get a reply.
-
Hans, does that include the Mobile Fidelity CD?
No, it doesn't - I've never heard the MoFi CD (forgot about it until you mentioned it), so I guess I should have said "...compared to the others that I've heard..."
-
Or a degree in maths...
-
The only CD issue that sounds decent compared to the others, at least in my opinion, is the TOCJ.
-
Okay, so maybe it doesn't sound great on solid state and electrostatics, but the sound is great on my system! Better than any other cd releases I've heard of the material. You are going to really enjoy this ED!I think you'll love this set, Ed.
As I don't believe you profess to be an audiophile, you should not have a problem with the sound.
Like Hans though, my system is very revealing and I hear the same problems that he has listed. In my case though, the combination of a Krell amp and Thiel speakers is most likely the culprit.
Lon might have a point, the remastering might not be suited for very revealing, solid-state-based high-end systems. However, I decided to listen to the entire set again (not in one sitting, though ) and start with disc 10. So far, it sounds OK, mellower than I remembered.
-
It's a wonderful set, but I don't like the sound (though it's indeed superior to those wretched early CD reissues): on my system and to my ears it sounds pumped-up and harsh, especially in the louder vocal parts. Pity.
-
Hans, I got "Shape of" from Mundo..have you tried him ?
You lucky ..... You probably got his last copy. I asked him, but he couldn't get it (anymore)
-
Hans — Hiroshi couldn't find Shape for you? Say it ain't so!
He tried, but...
-
So, the people who don't like RVGs and JRVGs, you've been warned: You will find much to not like here. (Hans, this means you! ).
Thanks for the warning, Scott B)

Does anyone have a list of these AMCY titles? I'd like to pick up The Shape of Jazz to Come, and I'm guessing Hiroshi Tanno is probably the best stop for this; if anyone can recommend another venue, please tell! I know that Roland Kirk's The Inflated Tear was part of this series, as well as the Marsh-Konitz Atlantic (though I think Koch's HDCD is sufficient, and sounds superb), and I think the Messengers/Monk collaboration was also part of this series. I'd like to know if any Shorty Rogers made it in. Whereas other Japanese series seem to get a fair amount of exposure (relatively speaking) here in the States, I don't remember ever really being aware of this particular series. I stumbled upon them, and tried to pick up what was affordable and available. (In the days of friendlier coupons at Tower, they could be had at a price not too painful on the eyes.)
Sorry to disappoint you, but you can forget about most titles in this series, they're virtually impossible to get - especially The Shape of Jazz to Come; I've been chasing that one for ages...

Free Jazz is the only Coleman issued in the series, and Pithecanthropus Erectus is the one Mingus title.
That's not quite true: there were two Ornette Coleman titles in the Japanese 20-bit K2 mini-LP sleeve series, Free Jazz (EastWest AMCY-1152) and The Shape of Jazz to Come (don't know the number, it's the only one mentioned here that I don't have), and there were also two Charles Mingus reissues in that series, Pithecanthropus Erectus (EastWest AMCY-1183) and The Clown (EastWest AMCY-1173).
I also have six Coltrane 20-bit K2 mini-LP sleeve titles and the Warne Marsh, and I agree with Late: they're terrific!
-
As far as I know, the older Japanese reissue (EastWest AMCY-1007) is not 20-bit or 24-bit remastered.
I have the later mini-LP sleeve reissue (EastWest AMCY-1159), and that one's 20-bit K2 remastered. The sound is much better than the domestic Rhino reissue.

To my ears and on my system some tracks of the Columbia set sound better, but overall the JSP set gets my vote; the Columbia is a bit too harsh to my taste.
-
I don't know if I will pick up the SACD. Is it mutichannel? Too many of the older recordings in mutichannel sound unnatural.

Didn't have the vinyl, so I'm not missing anything. This 4CD-set is pretty amazing.

June 2:
Matthew Shipp - Strata - hatOLOGY; great stuff!
-
P.S. I'm still not sure about Sweet Honey Bee - you know what I mean. I'll probably keep it, though
-
Good luck and all the best, Daniel! I'm looking forward to seeing you here again in a few months' time.

June 1:
Marilyn Crispell - Nothing Ever Was, Anyway. Music of Annette Peacock - 2CD, ECM; Late's earlier post inspired me.
Schubert - Piano Sonata in C Minor, D958 - Murray Perahia - 2CD, Sony; this great set also contains the Sonata in A Major, D959, and the Sonata in B-flat Major, D960. Recommended!

On an Annette Peacock kick recently, so ...
• Paul Bley: Ramblin' (BYG/Sunspots) — Nice remastering on this '02 edition. Fine thinking by Barry Altschul here.
• Marilyn Crispell: nothing ever was, anyway — One of my personal choices for a "crown." Gorgeous stuff in pristine sound.
• Paul Bley: Annette — Still trying to get used to Koglmann on this one. So far, I still like the tracks without him best.
• Paul Bley: Turning Point — John Gilmore. Nuff said.
I also have Annette's own An Acrobat's Heart, which is a very fine record, but I haven't spun it yet. I like both her piano playing and singing. If Irene Aëbi sang like Annette (their approach seems marginally related), I'd probably have a lot more Lacy records.
I don't like Annette Peacock's vocalising on Marilyn Crispell's otherwise brilliant Nothing Ever Was, Anyway. Music of Annette Peacock; I always skip that track.
I agree with you re Irene Aëbi's singing, though.

Ah, I see what you mean. I'm afraid you may be right...
