  1. Biviano is on the faculty at Berklee, but I don't know where he's from originally.
  2. I always write pertinent information on the inner sleeve, or on a separate piece of paper that I insert into the jacket. I never write on the jacket!

  5. "Best Of" compilations serve to introduce a novice to the artist's work, but ultimately it is the complete albums that provide the most satisfaction. In pop music, often all one would want is the hits, but jazz musicians don't usually have "hits" in the same sense, and what you are offered on a "Best of" set is somebody's rather subjective idea of what should be included. My favorite Dexter tracks might be completely different from those of the compiler.

  9. Can't tell you anything about the label, but I can give you the details about the tracks. They were recorded July, 1947, in LA, and were originally issued on 78 on the Rex label. The personnel is Benny Bailey (tp), Teddy Edwards (ts), Duke Brooks (p), Addison Farmer (b), Roy Porter (d). Eight tracks were cut at the date (the Rem omits Rexology & R. B.'s Wig). All 8 reissued on Onyx 215 (LP) and Cool & Blue 115 (CD). Info from Raben's "Jazz Records".

  11. Trumpeter's name is Oliver Beener. You did stump us with this one, Dan, but most didn't think much of it.
  12. You can't go wrong with Teagarden - he's pretty consistent. The Roulette sides are all similar. I like the Capitol stuff as well.

  15. Love those Roulette albums! I gotta play "Frame For the Blues" tonight.
  16. The phony stereo only compounds the problem. I tracked down a mono copy years ago, and the drums still sounded off-mike. I agree that the music is spectacular.

  18. I said that the sound is better than the "Live in Europe" LP. I meant the original LP, which always had lousy sound, even though the music was great. The remastered version of "Live in Europe" (I have it on the "Seven Steps To Heaven" box) is a huge improvement. On the original LP, the drums sounded off-mike. Since Columbia did not record this, but acquired the tapes from whoever did, I always assumed that this was the best they could do with what was provided to them. When I first heard "Cote Blues", most likely from the same source, I wondered why Columbia had not issued this set instead, since the sound was better. When the remastered version of "Live in Europe" came out on the box in 2004, I figured out what must have happened. Columbia must have figured that the drums were too loud, and re-EQ'ed the tapes to lower the drums' volume. Remember that before "Live In Europe" was issued, the world had not yet really heard this band with the dynamic Tony Williams in all its live glory. It turns out that the source tape for "Live in Europe" was fine, it was just butchered in the process that led to the LP.
  19. I bought it when it came out. Changing copyright laws in Europe forced the label to discontinue it. The sound is very good - much better than the LP "Miles Davis In Europe", which was recorded one day later at the same venue (Antibes Jazz Festival). The first recording with Coleman is "Seven Steps To Heaven", recorded two months earlier. Is it worth $79 or $99? Depends on whether you're buying it or selling it.
  20. What he said. NHS, NHS is one of Chick's greatest recordings. The extra stuff - very worthwhile.
  21. I think the medium of TV is no worse than any other medium - movies or music. There's plenty of shit but there are occasional gems amongst the crap. Personally I refuse to watch any program as it is broadcast, since I hate the ads. I tape the prgrams I want to see, and watch them at a later date. This way I can zip throught the ads & enjoy the show. We've always got a few programs on tape waiting to be watched. When I feel like watching a little teev, I've always got something. Current shows I like - Law & Order (all 3), Monk, Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Grey's Anatomy, Cold Case, Without a Trace. Six Feet Under is one of the best shows of the last decade. However, since Janet & I are avowed movie junkies, we watch at least two movies a week on DVD and once a week go out to see a theatrical release. On the big screen is the best way to see a movie, and we usually dine out before the show.

  25. Have dug this since the day it came out. This tune has always been the highlight of the album for me.
