Black Jazz reissues on Snow Dog label (Japan)
David Ayers replied to David Ayers's topic in Re-issues
I figured the Doug Carns might be the ones to have - so thanks, that's helpful. Should I get both? I think Infant Eyes is out and Spirit of the New Land is yet to come (there are more titles than are listed at the link I gave...) -
Curious about these reissues - any recommendations? http://soundcolourvibration.com/2013/01/01/black-jazz-reissues/

The poor man's alternative might be the double Walk Love Sleep, the 2011 tentet only - going cheaply on amazon.co.uk http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sleep-Peter-Brotzmann-Chicago-Tentet/dp/B00A0HRQ6Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1362662915&sr=8-2

Well, I'm always saying it - great title, one of several tasty Fontana/Roling titles. Make great reissues. Come on Andorra -

The line has to be drawn somewhere and I am going to rule that Phil Minton is not jazz. Sorry Phil. These are all great examples, I know maybe <half of them. Even where a chording instrument is present (guitar, vibes) the textures and principles change a lot. Where there is no chording instrument they change even more. A couple more that were favorites before I played them to death (!): Zorn/Frisell/Lewis, News for Lulu (Hat) Braxton/Lewis, Elements of Surprise (Moers), Donaueschingen (Duo) 1976 (Hat) There's quite a lot of Braxton outside the normal instrumentation zone. These duos with Lewis stand out for me not because of any particular formal innovation but just because they are fun. -

Something got lost in translation! There must be NO bass, NO drums, and probably NO piano.... -

Yes, i agree Whitstable solo is a fine starting place not least as it was the recording where I finally really 'got' EP's soprano solo playing after many attempts with other albums. This could too easily become an Evan Parker thread as I'd add 'Trance Map' (Psi) with Matthew Wright and if church organ is permitted then Parker's fine duo with Sten Standell 'Psalms' (Psi) Matt and Evan are local to me and played 'from' Trance Maps here only last week. Count me in on that. Don't know if I can allow organ though... -

Well, that's just my quirky way of putting it, maybe. I could have started a thread about solo albums, but what I was thinking about was how people construct a music, maybe for one or maybe for smaller or larger groups, where the fallback of the rhythm section has been removed, so that in some way functions of the rhythm section have been moved up to the 'lead' instruments, and in some ways the interest has to be provided in other ways. So I am just curious what projects of this kind people find to their liking. doesn't Berne usually use a drummer, by the way? -

I know quite a few of the Evan Parker solo recordings though not Time Lapse - recently turned to Whitstable solo (Psi) which I'd recommend to anyone as a first Evan Parker record (great engineering apart from anything else). The 'classic' EP solo for me will always be 'Saxophone Solos' (Incus/Psi). Next stop Five Chord Stud... -
Got it. That's Riis Park, Queens.

I like that clock. I wonder where it is?

A recent solo album listening project (Parker, Brotzmann, Schlippenbach) got me thinking. I'm already often not much entertained by piano, and in my zen-like paring down of my interests I've begun to realise it is much time since bass instruments or drums had much to say that I cared about. So I am looking for ideas on jazz or 'jazz' recordings with no bass or drums and probably no piano. My two recs to kick off are Brotzmann, Nothing to Say (FMP) and Sonore, Only the Devil has no Dreams (Jazzwerkstatt). Anyone want to mention favorites?

Bought it on issue, never loved it, eventually sold it, re-listening now on spotify.. apart from anything else I find the tunes a bit of a drag... -
Manufactured there, maybe, but there aren't many CD manufacturing plants in Europe any more so I'm not sure that means anything...

I don't know about Jasmine. They put out that Tubbs stuff quite some years ago, not sure if it was or wasn't PD.
-
Thanks for the breakdown. 'Eighth Wonder' is somewhat worthwhile, I guess, though I can't remember when I last played it....
-
I also see a Tubbs complete Tempo on 6 CDs listed at a very reasonable price.

I hadn't noticed any announcement but then I've never purchased downloads through them. I'm still in the dark ages either using Spotify as a taster before purchasing physical product or as a "radio" of music I don't want to shell the readies on. The Brotz box is very good (or at least the parts I've got through so far) so I hope you can find a download somewhere Spotify was good for downloads of longer tracks as they charged per track, so bargains were to be had. That said, like you I tend to either stream or buy CD. That said, the download + burn option is fine for me on stuff I know I'll have exhausted after a few listens... Would have probably worked well for this set...

Thought I might purchase the download via Spotify - but they have stopped selling downloads! There has been no announcement from them so far as I know.
