  1. The clothes and hair may have dated but the music is as fresh as ever.
  2. But Albert, you haven't told us which one was the most pompous blowhard... Sorry HG. Just got tired of seeing it.
  3. Here's an attempt to catalogue EKE tracks on cd. You do need to know the name of the cd the track is from and it's neither complete nor user friendly but it is a start: http://www.ellingtonweb.ca/Hostedpages/CDCatalogue/CD-Lists.htm Thanks for the link - it is very useful. I 'll never be an expert but it's enough to keep me going!
  4. I agree. I'd love to hear the music on the box but fancy-price commodity music buying is not top of my agenda these days. First disk is a must-hear, after that there's a few I might like to hear in due course. At that price it's competing directly with the Beatles box. In the end the prices tumbled on things like the Ayler and Two T's, so the time might come for those who have patience and/or a good streaming service. Looks good though...
  5. I'm afraid on this board we want EVERYTHING and then MORE. Not even one track should be erased from that mound of sound which we think of as a history. If I dared, I'd start by losing tracks with harpsichord, but I'd get an avalanche of people telling me how good they are, have I got the JRVG, etc.
  6. Thanks for posting this but I couldn't get it to work. It said 'This is a private video....please make sure you accept the sender's friends request.' I guess we all have to make friends somehow. Seriously, is this remediable?
  7. When Blue Note 'untangled' original LPs in a fad for restoring the 'original' sessions, as they did with their 1980s CD releases of The Sermon and House Party, and with The Turnaround/No Room for Squares, they dropped the original LP contents altogether, which was in a way fine, but meant for example that you got an otherwise very full edition of The Sermon without J.O.S.
  8. Oh. Seems Ira Gitler wrote those sleeve notes without ever hearing the LP! I knew it had been issued on Miles, I just assumed that it had been included on Cookin' as well (Gitler seems to say so). Sheesh those guys were such hacks.
  9. Well according to the rear sleeve of the LP (which I don't own: http://www.plosin.com/milesahead/prlp/prlp7094.html ) Just Squeeze Me *was* on the LP. And Steve Hoffman includes it on his DCC version. So where does that leave us?
  10. OK I only have one, which is Cookin'. Most but not all CD reissues leave out 'Just Squeeze Me'. Any other examples? Those 2 LP on 1 CD type deals which cut one track that won't fit don't count.
  11. Nothing has vanished so far from any of my playlists, that I have noticed, but some things I am sure I listened to seem to be gone. I just went to look for a new release on Intakt, thinking I had heard at least a recent Sylvie Courvoisier title from Intakt on there: no Intakt releases at all. In one or two other cases I got the impression that a chunk of stuff went awol. Other boutique labels are still being added, I think, but I am wondering if some try it out, see the revenue is extemely low (next to nothing), and pull. I know that ECM micro-manages what it shows, so some material is 'there' but you can't access it, but what I am noticing is not strategic suspension of albums or tracks but (I think) disappearance of whole labels. Has anyody noticed this on their service? My service is Spotify.
  12. I'm trying to figure out what is happening to CD 'collectors'. I find it noticeable that big label reissue programs (jazz and classical) have slowed down in some cases to nothing. All majors still attempt to promote current artists though. Is the whole model of having a *large* collection of historical material becoming a thing of the past, I wonder? Yet reissues still come, some even at premium price from companies like Mosaic. I can't quite figure out exactly what is happening. Whatever else is going on, it does seem that quite a few people are starting to look at their massive piles of CDs and LPs and seeing Imelda Marcos' shoes.
  13. This comes at a good time for me. I'd just been re-listening to Birdhouse (the exceptional first track made it into the program) and the Vintage Duets with Steve McCall, which weren't in there but still fare well, to my ears.
  14. Beer is a kind of milk, right?
  15. The plot thickens. On amazon.co.uk this is listed as a Sony release, without a price, linking to an mp3 or Cd alternative which is - the complete studio recordings with Gil Evans. Hmmm.... maybe I got this wrong...
  16. Milk. No cookies, sadly.
  17. I'd've got away with it too if it hadn't been for you pesky kids.
  18. Whatever will they think of next? UK pre-release price is 12.99 UKP - about 18 USD. If you want to google it the serial number is 88697787842.
  19. Happy Birthday, man. Keep it unreal.
  20. I can't buy this just for three unissued tracks... It's great that so much HT is currently available - the Black Saint set, this one, and odds and ends elsewhere. PS just in case you never googled it here is a useful HT discography: http://discography.backstrom.se/threadgill/
  21. Well there are two stories there, losing the instruments, and failing to insure them. Really it is the second which stands out.
  22. Oh and you didn't mention streaming, which for me is where I hear most new jazz that I don't already own. I don't much like managing an mp3 library, it seems like a waste of time, and in general I prefer to listen to ten titles once than one title ten times.
  23. How many people are ripping their CDs and selling them? I notice many more Mosaics now on ebay than ever (um, I only glanced - life is too shoprt to mess around with ebay....).
  24. The thread where we listed current listening seems to have died. Is it worth a thread where we list new discoveries or new appearances? I just noticed that a mass of Jazzwerkstatt titles appeared on Spotify. Here's my rather conservative selection, but there is lots more: http://open.spotify.com/user/davidayers/playlist/6qW42wCnf9kvyFdMU5J0qy
